The company behindElden Ring, FromSoftware, is pulling the plug on another title. The dreaded day is upon us, a fate that will eventually befall all FromSoftware fans—the shutting down ofDark Souls 2‘s servers.

DS2 might not as loved as Elden Ring, but it will be missed

Regardless of the mixed opinions that the company’s fans have about the title, the hollow feeling of seeing something you once loved slowly fade away is universal. On March 31st,DS2will bid farewell to its online servers, marking the end of an era.

Say Goodbye to Dark Souls 2’s Online Servers

Dark Souls 2is the second installation of the critically acclaimedDark Soulsseries. It was released on July 05, 2025, marking a little over a decade since its release. On March 31st, the game’s Xbox 360 and PS3 servers will be shut down for good.

The#DarkSouls2PS3 and Xbox 360 servers will shut down on July 14, 2025.

A message stating that online play is disabled will be displayed. Offline play will still be possible.

The game wasn’t super well received at the time of its release, and it still isn’t, continuing to be a point of contention forFromSoftwarefans. However small the game’s player base is, there’s no denying the passion and love they hold for the title.

Not to worry, Elden Ring’s future is looking good

Thankfully for those playing on newer gen consoles through theScholar of the First Sinedition of the game, they’ll still be able to co-op as those servers will be unaffected.

So why exactly isDS2hated so much? The answers you’ll get will be quite different, depending on who you ask. Some cite Miyazaki’s absence from the development process, others point to mechanical changes, and so on. Nostalgia for the originalDark Soulsmay also play a role.

To the game’s credit, when you’re ranking games in a franchise, there has to be a game that’s ranked at the bottom. WhileDS2might not be everyone’s cup of tea, there’s no reason not to give it a shot. With the PS4, PC, and Xbox One servers still running, you could have some fun and bizarre co-op experiences too!

Will Elden Ring’s Servers Shut Down?

News of the end ofDS2‘s servers has inevitably brought up questions regardingElden Ring‘s future.

Considering that newer editions ofDS2still have functioning servers and it hasn’t even been five years since the release ofElden Ring, safe to say, you won’t have to worry about the game’s lifespan anytime soon.

Especially with the arrival of the upcoming DLC,Shadow of the Erdtree, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that we’re just entering the game’s golden era. There’s bound to be a ton of new players with the DLC’s release.

If the success of the DLC is phenomenal, then there’s a possibility we could get another DLC or a sequel. Whatever the case may be, there’s a mighty strong fanbase behind the game that’s ready to eat up what Miyazaki cooks.
