Alyson Hannigan, alongside Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, and Neil Patrick Harris once ruled the world of sitcoms in the 2000s withHow I Met Your Mother. Despite its relentless comparison with another legendary 90s sitcomFriends, the show amassed a massive fandom over the years.

Unfortunately,HIMYMcould not retain its charm till the very end. The ending of the CBS show was as polarizing as it could be with several decisions, that did not work out with the fans.
A massive chunk of the fandom felt that it was rushed and did not do justice to the characters. Even the revelation about The Mother’s demise disappointed many. Surprisingly, the Lily Aldrin actress, Alyson Hannigan was also not a fan of the ending and had similar feelings as the viewers.

Alyson Hannigan’s thoughts onHow I Met Your Mother‘s ending
How I Met Your Mothertook a unique approach where we are first introduced to an aged Ted Mosby narrating to his children in the year 2030, his life story from 2005 that led him to meet his wife. The friendship between the young Ted Mosby and Marshall, Lily, Barney, and Robin was also a significant part of the show.
How I Met Your Mother Cast and What Are They Doing Now?
The audience was hooked for nine seasons to find out who The Mother was. After repeated hints for several seasons, it was finally revealed that the mother of Ted Mosby’s children was Tracy McConnell, played by Cristin Milioti.
However, the ending was full of surprises as it was revealed that The Mother sadly passed away six years earlier and the long series concluded with an old Ted Mosby asking out Robin again. This end was unpleasant to most fans who felt it was anti-climactic and too rushed.Alyson Hanniganstated toNews.com.authat many key portions of the episode were cut which were needed.

It just seemed too quick. Obviously it was a tear-jerker, but with all the stuff that got cut out it was too fast … like ‘OK, now we’re going to find out the mum’s dead, then suddenly, OK — he’s with Robin now’, and you’re just like, ‘wait, what happened?!’ There was a funeral scene [that got cut], and all this stuff that I think the audience needed.
TheAmerican Pieactress agreed that chunks of information were just slapped on the face of the audience. The viewers never got the time to process everything that happened with the Josh Radnor character. Hannigan also added that Neil Patrick Harris’ Barney wasnot written wellin the concluding seasons-“I didn’t think Barney should have ever gotten married”.

How did Josh Radnor defend theHIMYMending?
The ending ofHow I Met Your Motherwas so polarizing that the makers even released an alternate version of the episodeLast Foreveron DVD. In this version,Josh Radnorand Cobie Smulders’ Tod and Robin never re-unite as The Mother never meets her untimely death.
Many audiences did not like how Ted Mosby went to Robin once again in the broadcast ending. However, actor Josh Radnor had a different perspective on it. He suggested that the audience were displeased only because they were sad at the end of the show. During a conversation with the older Ted Mosby actor Bob Saget on the latter’sHere For Youpodcast, he said:

People were more comfortable being angry than sad. They were sad their favorite show was ending and they were sad it didn’t end the way they wanted it to. Rather than sit with the feelings of sadness or loss—which is what [creators] Carter [Bays] and Craig [Thomas] were asking people to sit with… not everyone was up for that.
The presently 49-year-old actor added that it will take some time for the fans to be kinder toHIMYM.Although Radnor might not be wrong to state“Anger is an easier emotion than grief”, many fans had genuine criticisms of the finale and did not agree with the actor’s statement.
