Obsidian Entertainmentdeveloper and game director Josh Sawyer took to Twitter recently to open up about the canceled Aliens RPG Obsidian was working on underSega.

Replying to a post asking game developers to post about the one game “that got away” and never came to fruition,Sawyer statedthat it was theAliensRPG that was in development from 2006-2009, which was revealed to the public as Aliens: Crucible all the way back in 2006. Sawyer cites Obsidian’s lack of hierarchy at the time as part of the reason the project didn’t end up working out, claiming that it led to “dysfunction when the leads didn’t agree on how to do something”. He explains that this was due to Obsidian ownership at the time believing that leaving authority with a single person would be a bad idea, and he would only end up being director of the Aliens game for three months overall.

He goes on to explain that game’s development was “very slow”, particularly when creating game levels, with Sega eventually scrapping the game in favor of 2009s Obsidian Entertainment RPGAlpha Protocol. It doesn’t appear that Sawyer holds any ill will against Sega for the decision, noting that he thought it was an understandable choice. He also draws an interesting comparison to 2021s co-op shooter Aliens: Fireteam Elite, with both games having a small team of squad mates, third-person shooting, and an emphasis on “deployables and support actions.”

While he believes the ideas for the RPG were solid, he makes the point that “you don’t ship ideas”, and that his takeaway from the project is that “if you don’t have playable levels, you don’t have much of a game.”

Josh Sawyer first got his start at Obsidian’s predecessor Black Isle Studio, which was the studio behind the classic RPGs Fallout and Planescape: Torment, as well as the publisher for Baldur’s Gate. Sawyer has since gone on to direct Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, and Pentiment, which have all been released to widespread acclaim from players and critics alike.Pentiment in particular earnedan exceptional 9.5/10 score from DualShockers, earning it a spot on our cumulative2022 Game Of The Year list. Obsidian’s upcoming projects are the fantasy RPG Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, which will both be released exclusively onPCandXbox Series X|S.
