After playing a younger Lando Calrissian inSolo: A Star Wars Story, actor Donald Glover was set to return as the character in a spinoff series of his own. However, last year series director Justin Simien left the project and Glover took over creative duties along with his brother Stephen Glover. It was later announced that the series would be a film.

Simien recently opened up about losing the project and how it felt after working on it for so long. He mentioned that they had gone as far as creating the show bible and that it felt terrible to lose the project after. However, fans are criticizing Simien’s analogy where he compared the project’s end to losing a child.
FormerLandoCreator Receives Flak For An Absurd Analogy
DespiteSolo: A Star Wars Storybombing at the box office,Donald Glover’sportrayal of a young Lando Calrissian was appreciated by fans and critics alike. TheAtlantastar would go on to receive his own spinoff Disney Plus series, much like otherStar Warsstories likeAhsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, andThe Mandalorian.

While Justin Simien ofDear White Peoplefame was attached as the showrunner, he left last year and Glover and his brother took over the project. Simien was reportedly devastated by the news and even mentioned how he handled the grief. He said toCollider,
It is true grief. I’ve never had a child, I’ve never lost a child, but it’s what I imagine that pain might be like. You pour so much of your heart and soul into something, but ultimately, you don’t have control over whether it lives or dies, and it is a true grieving process.

While Simien compared the grief of working on something with passion and that being abruptly canceled to losing a child (a film/story is often regarded as a director’s baby), many fans were unhappy with the analogy. Simen received considerable backlash for the comparison and was criticized for diminishing the grief of losing a child.
Yeah I respect the art for sure but no way am I comparing that to a child.

This moron really compared losing a TV show to losing a child… in what fucking world is this ok?… someone drag his ass to oblivion.
WTF? His spin off is like losing a child?

That’s the stupidest comment perhaps ever. The ‘pain’ of your tv show being sidelined is not the same as that of the loss of a child.Hubristic cretin.
It’s entertainment (and maybe not even entertaining at that). These people need to stop seriously comparing stuff like this to actually losing a child.

The filmmaker and showrunner also mentioned that he had been going to therapy to process the grief and he even mentioned that he was not told directly that the series was canceled.
Donald Glover’sLandoSeries Will Now Be A Movie
Films other than the Skywalker Saga in theStar Warsfranchise have mostly been misses. WhileRogue One: A Star Wars Storywas relatively a success, it still had a Darth Vader sequence at the end and connected to the original trilogy. Donald Glover’s first appearance as Lando inSolo: A Star Wars Storyalso turned out to be a box office bomb.

However, Glover’sLandoseries, which saw Justin Simien exiting has reportedly been redeveloped into a film. Co-writer Stephen Glover reportedly mentioned in thePablo Torres Finds Outpodcast that the IP was not a series anymore. He said,
It’s not even a show…the idea right now is to do a movie. Right now, because of the strike, it’s kind of like telephone, all of the information.
Lucasfilm also confirmed the report toVariety. While no director has been attached to the project, Stephen and Donald Glover still seemed to be creatively involved.
