Nintendo is returning to its retro roots and bringing back its classicSuper Mario Bros.Game and Watch. To celebrate itsSuper Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary Direct, Nintendo dropped a very special and exciting announcement yesterday, revealing a host of new games. Along with probably the biggest reveal,Super Mario 3D All Starscollection was announced for the Switch,Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit,the return ofSuper Mario 3D World,Super Mario Bros 35,Cat Mario and Cat Peach Amiibo’s, andSuper Mario All-Stars.Phew, have you caught your breath yet? To add to the excitement, retro and modern gamers will also get a chance to play the originalSuper Mario Broson this classic handheld, too.
The Game & Watch will feature a full-color version ofSuper Mario Brosand you’ll be able to get your hands on it when it releases as a limited edition on November 13. It will also launch with some new and improved Game & Watch hardware, saying goodbye to the plastic handheld systems from the 1980s. Although, in my opinion, this is where the classic charm lay. Along with the originalSuper Mario Bros., the Game & Watch will also includeSuper Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels, and a new version ofGame & Watch: Ballfeaturing Mario which was the company’s first Game & Watch title in 1980.
So that you’ll never wonder what time it is, the Game and Watch also includes a functioning clock where you will see Mario and various Yoshis knock down some blocks that eventually represent the current time where you are. Nintendo also brushed upon “35 little touches to discover”, although it’s not clear at this time what those touches will be, but I’m certain they will be just as cute as this little handheld and I need it in my life.
For those of you who are new to the Game and Watch series, the handhelds produced and manufactured by Nintendo first appeared in 1980 and ran all the way through to 1990. First created by game designer Gunpei Yokoi, the Game and Watch got its name due to the LCD screen also featuring a clock and the models produced from 1981 onwards had a nifty little alarm included. That may not sound like a lot these days, but back then this was the state of the art technology. It’s easy to see why these palm-sized gadgets did so well, not only allowing the player to play their favorite game on the go but also due to its multi-functioning abilities, thus selling a combination of 43.4 million units worldwide.
