Arc System Works revealed with ateaser trailer a brand newGuilty Geargame at Evo 2019. Later on, Arc System Works published a message by Daisuke Ishiwatari on itsofficial site, giving a little bit more details on the game.
Daisuke Ishiwatari mentioned how the newGuilty Geargame isn’t an “evolution” of the series, nor a “return to its roots”, but is instead a “complete rebuild ofGuilty Gear”. Instead of adding or removing elements compared to the previous games, he assimilated the development to completely breaking downGuilty Gear, picking up the parts which make the charm and the uniqueness of the series, and remake it with them.
Ishiwatari mentioned this newGuilty Geargame is a “big challenge which will go head to head against the essence of fighting games”.
He added that going this route is a risky bet, but they’re confident they can pull it off and bring out new possibilities, using all the experience and materials they’ve accumulated so far. Ishiwatari ended the message saying he believes games are bridges which can connect people, so he hopes this newGuilty Gearwill reflect this idea.
Arc System Works also announced that further details and a playable build of the newGuilty Geargame will be available at ArcREVO America 2019, held from November 16 to November 17 in Los Angeles.
Daisuke Ishiwatari isGuilty Gear’s scenarist, composer, and character designer. He’s credited as General Director for the upcoming new game.
The nextGuilty Gearis scheduled to launch in 2020, the game has no platforms announced yet.
Update:Above, I translated the Japanese version of Ishiwatari’s message, and didn’t realize there was already an official English translation. What’s worth noting is how the official English translation accentuates “this newest title is being developed with one goal in mind: To create a game that both new and existing players alike would want to get their hands on.”. Arcsys didn’t mention that’s the “one goal” of the development in the Japanese message. Hence why I didn’t mention it first as it’s not as accentuated in the Japanese version. I understand better now why some fear the game will be simplified. In my opinion, it’s too early to tell, and even if it is, simplicity doesn’t mean without depth.
