Seinfeld is widely regarded as one of the greatest sitcoms on television, celebrated for its witty observations of everyday life and unique brand of humor. The show’s popularity was on a different level in the 1990s, making it a cultural phenomenon that resonated with millions of viewers. But one episode in particular could have jeopardized the show’s success.

However, Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld managed to navigate this delicate subject with their trademark cleverness. But despite their careful handling, the episode wasn’t without a minor setback.
Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld Subtly Tackled a Risqué Topic
Jerry Seinfeld, the legendary comedian and creator of the iconic sitcomSeinfeld, shared some fascinating behind-the-scenes happenings while speaking at theHoward Stern Showin 2023. One memorableepisodeof the sitcom that fans adore was the one where Kramer gets the Merv Griffin set in his apartment (Season 9, Episode 6).
Seinfeld shared that this premise wasn’t his but came from Bruce Eric Kaplan, a cartoonist for The New Yorker. Kaplan was part of theSeinfeldwriting team at the time. After this, Howard Stern brought up the infamous m*sturbation episode, and Seinfeld confirmed that it was Larry David’s idea.

Interestingly, the creator noted that NBC didn’t object to the episode’s controversial topic, as they never actually used the word m*sturbation on air. To this Stern asked,“You never said the word,”and Seinfeld emphasized,“Never did”despite the episode’s delicate subject matter.

The creator confirmed the same and mentioned that he could have negotiated for more but ultimately declined the offer. The reason for this wasn’t his integrity but preserving the intense connection between the show’s creators and the fans. Further, he wanted to end the show on a high note, ensuring that till the end it remained a cherished piece of television history.
Jerry Seinfeld Envisions Andy Kaufman as the Ideal Kramer
In the same Howard Stern interview, Seinfeld expressed his deep love and respect for the late Andy Kaufman. The iconic Long Island-born comedian had a profound impact on him. Known for his inventive physical comedy and his memorable role as Latka Gravas onTaxi,Kaufmanleft a lasting legacy before his untimely death in 1984 due to lung cancer.
When Howard Stern suggested that Kaufman would have been a perfect fit for the role of Kramer inSeinfeld, the creator agreed. He acknowledged that while Michael Richards’s portrayal was irreplaceable, Kaufman might have been the only other actor capable of embodying Kramer.

In a twist of fate, Richards and Kaufman had a notable encounter on the 1980s sketch show,Fridays. However, during the sketch involving a double date, both actors spontaneously deviated from the script. Further, this led to a chaotic and seemingly real altercation.
