While there are moments that stay in people’s minds rent-free from films likeMan of Steel, 300,andWatchmen, Snyder’s feature film debutDawn of the Deadhas often been regarded as his best to date. Written by now DCU co-chief James Gunn, the remake of George A. Romero’s classic horror film was reportedly intended to renew the zombie genre.

Despite Romero disregarding the film(Via TimeOut), many have appreciated the film for staying true to the source material and for blending it well with the action genre. The opening sequence has become a modern-day classic and many still believe it holds up to today’s standards.

“If there was a zombie apocalypse these would be the two movies I’d save, Dawn of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead.”

Zach Snyder is definitely the weirdest and most inconsistent of my favorite directors. He’s made some of my very favorite movies, like The Watchmen and this remake of Dawn of the Dead, and then he’s made crap that I’ve literally walked out of, like BvS: Dawn of Justice. 🧐

Snyder spoke toDen of Geekabout what satisfied him about the project. He mentioned that he liked that neither he nor the studio ever wanted to sanitize the original film and make it palatable for modern audiences. He said that the team was successful in staying true to that.

The thing I’m proudest of is that, even though it was a genre film made for a studio and low budget, I still feel like I made an unexpected movie. I didn’t clean it up too much. You know what I mean? Like how a modern remake can sometimes sanitize an idea.
