Putting all of the elements such as gameplay and store aside,The Last of Us Part 2from Naughty Dog has been getting a lot of praise for howmany accessibility features it included. There are over 60 features, which is themost for a AAA gameand also the features available have been intuitive enough that blind players of varying spectrums can play and complete the entire game. Now, it seems as if the studio wants to help other studios.

In an interviewwith Can I Play That, Matthew Gallant, Lead Systems Designer at Naughty Dog said, “Knowledge sharing is critical to the advancement of accessibility support across the games industry,” he added, “We have and will continue to discuss and collaborate with other developers and studios who are also striving to provide better accessibility features for players.”

In addition, co-lead Game Designer Emilia Schatz hopes that “Naughty Dog’s investment in accessibility saves that guesswork for other developers, allowing them the development time to include and even improve on these features for their own games.”

The rest of the interview looks at how the team at Naughty Dog implemented accessibility features early on, how the features “required a studio-wide effort to ensure they worked consistently across every level in the game,” and how they can carry over the existing features to future titles. Emila also said, “As creators advancing games as a way of telling stories, it’s incumbent on us to also remedy the ways our medium falls short. Games should be for everyone.”

Hopefully, the sheer scale of accessibility options in Naughty Dog’sThe Last of Us Part 2will mean that future first-party titles from Sony will follow suit and inspire other studios. It’s certainly great to see that the team are, and have collaborated with studios before to ensure other games are accessible.
