Singer Mariah Carey has reportedly experienced a tragedy on the personal front. The singer recently revealed that her mother Patricia passed away during the weekend. To further the tragedy, Carey’s sister Alison also reportedly lost her life on the same day as her mother’s.

Carey has yet to reveal the causes of their deaths but she issued a statement confirming that both of the family members had passed. The singer had opened up about her complex relationship with her mother on several occasions. Apart from her mother, Carey reportedly also wrote about her relationship with her sister in her memoir.

The singer, however, reportedly went through a personal tragedy over the week as her mother Patricia and sister Alison passed away on the same day. While the cause of death was not revealed, Carey requested privacy for her and her family as they dealt with the tragedy.
Carey issued a statement regarding her mother and sister’s death toPeople,

My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day. I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.
Patricia was reportedly also a singer and was well-versed in the opera. Carey has mentioned how she encouraged her singing career on multiple occasions.

Mariah Carey Had A Complicated Relationship With Her Mother
While Mariah Carey received a lot of encouragement from her mother regarding pursuing a career in singing and has credited her with not forcing her to go the opera route like herself, she has written about the complex relationship she shared with Patricia. Carey wrote about an incident with her mother in her memoirThe Meaning of Mariah Carey. Her mother reportedly put her down once after having a singing session in the car when Carey was a teen. She wrote (viaPeople),
[She said] ‘You should only hope that one day you become half the singer I am’. Still, to this day, what she said haunts and hurts me. I don’t know if she meant to cut me down to size or it was just her bruised ego talking; all I know is that those words that shot out of her mouth pierced my chest and were buried in my heart.

While crediting her with encouraging her to be an artist, Carey also acknowledged that she faced significant neglect from her mother and it took her a long time to come to terms with that duality.
