Spectacular animation can truly accentuate the appeal of a romance anime, andThe Magical Girl and The Evil LieutenantUsed to be Archenemiesanime is the perfect example of it. There was nothing to worry about on the animation front, as the animation studio behind the anime worked on notable shows likeMy Hero AcademiaandMob Psycho 100.

While the animation was taken care of, there was another jolting problem with theMagical Girl and Evil Lieutenant anime. It tells the story of a 15-year-old magical girl and an evil lieutenant who is in his thirties. There’s a huge age gap between the two, and seeing the duo in a romantic light feels wrong for many reasons.

The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to be Archenemies: A Beautiful Story with a Jarring Problem

The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to be Archenemiesanime was undoubtedly a highlight of Summer 2024. With beautiful animation and interesting characters, the anime pulled at the audience’s heartstrings. There’s a great mix of comedy, emotional sequences, and lots of fluff. The anime has everything working in its favor, but also a huge problem that’s hard to ignore. The age gap between the central couple is more than a decade, and the female character is a minor.

While most interactions between the two characters are cute meetings at the park, there are some scenes that definitely raise some eyebrows. The seemingly innocent meetings have many one-liners with inappropriate innuendos. Moreover, there’s a concerning amount of fan service as well. Although it’s not explicitly mentioned that they get together, it’s quite apparent that the characters will continue to interact in the same manner for years to come.

A Silent Voice is Far Superior to One of the Best Romance Anime Films Despite its Overarching Criticism Because of One Key Detail

The anime has ended and it’s safe to assume that the ship has sailed, which is unfortunate. Beyond the fluff, the characters showed emotional depth in glimpses. The lieutenant was also considerate. These character traits were the perfect set-up for an original ending that could address the inappropriate age gap and the many issues with it.

An Original Ending Could be a Quick Fix

It needs to be mentioned that the anime doesn’t promise anything too deep and is more about fluff and wholesomeness. Yet, an original ending could gloss over the fact that this relationship wouldn’t work or how it’s bound to be dysfunctional. This happened in theAfter the Rainanime as well. Admittedly, both the anime are worlds apart, butAfter the Rainnaturally shifted the focus from romance. Similarly, the dynamics between the magical girl and the lieutenant could have been developed into something else.

The first season of the anime has ended and so is the case with the manga. The manga could never have a proper ending as Cocoa Fujiwara, the mangaka, passed away before she could conclude the story. While the possibility of a potential season 2 is seemingly less, the anime has garnered significant attention from fans. If not an entire season, a bonus episode could also work as a quick fix.

Everything is great in the anime but the age difference puts a huge question mark over the whole thing. It seems likeStudio Bones’ prioritywith the anime was to serve a gorgeous-looking anime that’s somewhat entertaining. The visual appeal was prioritized over the narrative, and they’ve done it quite well. However, a better ending could have easily made this anime a highlight of the season, bringing it the attention it deserves.
