Atlus is no stranger to massive, bombastic boss battlesin its games, andMetaphor: ReFantaziois no exception to this.
The most threatening type of monster in the game, the humans, are all gigantic mutant beasts with disquietingly humanoid features.

However, it’s not just the humans you have to be ready to throw down with.
Metaphor ReFantazio: How To Beat The Goborn King
Hide that staff if you know what’s good for you!
From dragons to ancient evils, this game’s boss fights really know how to set you against powerful opponents.

Each boss will pummel you with terrifying attacks, with both required and optional fights requiring extensive planning.
They’re intimidating, though that just makes doing battle with them all the more satisfying.

Be advised, we’re getting into major story spoilers below.
10Homo Sabara
Who’s Craving Calamari?
After departing Brilehaven to cross the sea, the party feels confident that it’ll be smooth sailing.
After all, Forden claimed to the crowds that he had slain the terrible human that was hunting in the ocean.

Unfortunately, that was a big fat lie, because there’s a gigantic octopus-like human looking to wrap its tentacles on anything that passes by.
The battle with Homo Sabara necessitates a stable of AoE spells and attacks to destroy all of its tentacles.

Cutting down the tentacles lessens its attack power and gives you a free turn to pummel it into fish paste.
9Homo Jaluzo
It’s Cute In A Horrible, Disgusting Way
In Martira, Heismay is initially blamed for the disappearances of the town’s children.
The truth of the matter is much darker: Sanctoress Joanna has been keeping an infant-like human in the basement of her castle and feeding it innocents.
Homo Jaluzolooks like a disembodied baby head on beastly legs with a massive maw of sharp teeth.
Metaphor: ReFantazio: Kriegante Castle Guide & Walkthrough
Children are going missing, and you need to get to the bottom of it!
This fight employs a bit of a bait and switch by goading you into attacking the monster’s eyes.
However, you’re only supposed to destroy one eye so you’re able to see which party member it’s aiming at.
If you destroy both eyes, it’ll just charge in randomly.
8Homo Avades
Fear The Terrible Egg Butt
After being defeated at the top of the cathedral, Zorba uses his necromancy to revive the human corpse Louis had brought and set it on a rampage.
This revived human,Homo Avades, has one of the most bizarre designs in the game, and that’s saying something.
To make it lower the heart on its head into attacking range, you need to smash open its giant egg-like butt.
After you attack the heart, though, a horde of frog people will spawn in the egg butt and swarm you if you don’t destroy them first.
7Devourer Of Flames
That Is Entirely Too Much Fire
In Metaphor’s endgame, there’s a series of optional battles you may take on, collectively known as the Trial of the Dragon.
Unsurprisingly, all of these battles are against powerful dragons. The most intimidating one is known as the Devourer of Flames.
Leave it unchecked, and it’ll wipe the entire party with a 9,999-damage fire attack.
The best way to prepare is to have as much of your party repel, null, or absorb as much fire as possible.
With a bit of tinkering, you can even nullify the dragon’s own fire resistance and send its attack back at it.
6Melancholia Zorba
What Unchecked Zealotry Gets You
Midway through the Skybound Avatar, you’re confronted again by Zorba.
Completely lost in his devotion to Louis, Zorba has willingly submitted to melancholia, becoming a half-human abomination.
Zorba swaps between an offensive form and a defensive form, pummeling your party with dark magic and buffing himself, respectively.
However, he can’t defend against skills that pierce resistances and have damage bonuses against humans.
Makes you think he didn’t really think this one through.
5Louis Guiabern
The Man With The Plan
Louis is the main antagonist of Metaphor: ReFantazio, a militaristically-powerful count who wants to turn Euchronia into a purely strength-based meritocracy.
With lofty goals like that, it goes without saying he’s no pushover.
You fight Louis several times throughout the story, andhe’s a powerful combatant.
Louis can switch the magic enveloping his sword on the fly to specifically target your party’s weaknesses.
Louis is so dangerously charismatic that all he has to do is look at you funny to inflict severe debuffs to your attack and defense.
4Sogne The Icebound
A Girl And Her Dragon
After the revelation that Rella is the one who cursed the Prince, she escapes to the derelict Mage Academy for a showdown.
When the party arrives, Rella summons forth the mountain’s guardian dragon,Sogne the Icebound.
This is an absolutely brutal fight, as not only do you have to deal with Sogne’s ice attacks, but also Rella’s light magic.
Sogne is weak to fire, but Rella puts up a magic barrier to prevent you from exploiting that.
Additionally, after you get Sogne down to critical health, Rella will sacrifice herself to restore him.
3Redscale Apocalypse Dragon
A Post-Game Superboss For A Reason
In Akademia, there is a tightly bound red book in the corner of the room.
Normally, interacting with it prompts More to tell you to knock it off, but in New Game Plus, you can crack it open.
Doing so reveals the immensely powerful Redscale Apocalypse Dragon, the game’s super boss.
The dragon is level 99, has no weaknesses, and has a chance to casually wipe out the entire party on just about any given turn.
Needless to say, this is a boss fight you should only attempt after going all the way back around to the endgame, and with maxed stats andelite Archetypes.
2Elegy Of The Soul
Turns Your Strength Against You
At the end of the Trial of the Dragon, the party is confronted by a shadowy doppelganger of the protagonist.
This doppelganger, the Elegy of the Soul, is the only opponent in the entire game who can also utilize the power of the Archetypes.
He’ll cycle through various Archetype lines, altering both his resistances and the moves available to him, necessitating constant adaptation.
As an extra insult to injury, any attempts to set up attack repels will prompt him to instantly wipe the party as punishment.
It’s a little trick Atlus loves to employ in its optional bosses as far back as Persona 3.
1Destroyer Charadrius
So Much For That Plan, Louis
In the game’s final battle, Louis has completely lost himself to melancholia, transforming into the largest, most horrible human you’ve ever seen.
Putting aside the palpable irony that he wasn’t strong enough to survive his own plan for the world, Louis’s transformed state is full of disorienting tricks and gimmicks.
Besides the usual powerful attacks and debuffs, Louis will attempt to devour dolls representing the various tribes.
If he succeeds, he’ll unleash even more powerful physical and magical attacks.
In his second phase, he’ll also target certain tribe members in your party for an insta-kill.
