Another weekend means another large-scale fighting game tournament! This past weekend saw a host of competitive players going toe-to-toe at the Dominican Republic’s Fighting Fest 2018 to test their might in such games asMortal Kombat XL,Tekken 7,Dragon Ball FighterZ, andGuilty Gear Xrd Revelator 2. Of course, since the event incorperated a leg of the ongoing Capcom Pro Tour the main eventcame in the form of the ever-evolvingStreet Fighter V: Arcade Edition.
The top 8 began with a slew of knockouts as MrEstrella’s Rashid, Caba’s Guile, and LuMan20’s combination of Dhalsim and Blanka were eliminated from the competition in swift succession. Doomsnake barrelled through LuMan20 and Jochy with minimal effort to secure a spot in grand finals. However, MenaRD’s run was not as easy. A 3-1 loss to Jochy saw him take a slot in the losers' bracket where he then eliminated Crossover and Mono to earn a rematch with Jochy in losers' semi-finals. This time around though, MenaRD came out on top with a 3-0 victory to meet Doomsnake for a final showdown.
With Doomsnake having the upper hand entering the grand final, the match kicked off with him playing asStreet Fighter IIboss Vega while MenaRD played as British brawler Birdie. Vega’s fast and aggressive playstyle opened MenaRD up for some heavy damage and enormous combos in the early stages. Following a flurry of lighting fast rounds, Doomsnake quickly found himself on tournament point. However, on the verge of being eliminated, MenaRD clawed his way back piece by piece. Through a long and steady game, he waited for the correct openings and punished Doomsnake’s advances to reset the bracket. From here, he continued this new composure and turned the tide and win Fighting Fest 2018 with a sweeping 3-0 victory.
Street Fighter V: Arcade Editionis available now on PlayStation 4 and PC withG and Sagat rounding off the title’s third season.
