Asta is the overzealous and adorable protagonist ofBlack Clover. Yuki Tabata might not have created a unique hero, but he is definitely an impressionable one. A lot of major Shonen tropes for heroes were combined to form Asta.
Now, you might argue that Asta is too short to be a conventional hero, but hey!Black Cloverfans love their short king and are ready to defend him to death. But the character does have his thick-skulled moments, and Yuki Tabata seems to have some advice for Asta.
Yuki Tabata has Advice for Asta’s Love Life inBlack Clover
Inan interview with Viz Media,Yuki Tabatadiscussed various aspects of theBlack Clovermanga. In one segment, the author was asked if he could speak to Asta, what advice would he give the character? Tabata at first admitted that Asta is a better person than him, so he should be the one giving advice to the author. But on second thought, Tabata did have something on his mind.
Maybe I’d tell him that if he really wants to win over Sister Lily, maybe he shouldn’t be so aggressive?
Asta proposing his love for Sister Lily is a running gag in theBlack Cloveranime/manga. Asta’s dream is to marry Sister Lily someday, and he regularly proposes to her. Unfortunately, Sister Lily’s mind has not been swayed even a bitby this chibi hero. As often as he proposes to her, Sister Lily finds some way or the other to reject his advances.
In fact, Sister Lily even went to the lengths of using her magic powers to stop Asta from proposing to her. According to Yuki Tabata’s statement, Asta is being too eager and loud whenever he proposes. It’s almost like he treats Lily as a rival who is not consenting to a battle. The guy is so meatheaded that he has no idea tenderness is what is requiredin matters of the heart.

On the other hand, Yuki Tabata, the person who creates and manipulates all characters ofBlack Clover,giving advice to Asta is too hilarious. The author definitely can’t break Asta’s character to make him soft-spoken, so all he can do is resort to giving advice that will never reach Asta.
Asta’s Obsession with Sister Lily is Second Only to His Ambition of Becoming the Wizard King
Sister Lily helped raise Asta and Yuno when they resided at the church in Hage. Asta is infatuated with Sister Lily and proposes to her repeatedly. To her credit, Lily does not act rudely towards Asta despite his acts of love clearly being annoying. She is not afraid of using her Water Magic when the time calls for it, to aid her rejection. You can only imagine how it must crush Asta’s soul, but in true Shonen (and a bit creepy) fashion,he never gives up.

It was Sister Lily who read the story about the Wizard King to Asta when he was a kid, and since then, Asta has wanted to achieve the title for himself. (I bet she never reads that story anymore) He wants to be the Wizard King mostly so that the people at church can live better lives, and also to win over Sister Lily. Asta wholeheartedly believes that becoming the Wizard King is the path to winning Sister Lily’s heart.
He also writes letters to Sister Lily to update her on his whereabouts. When Asta proposed to Lily after the Spade Kingdom war, she stated that she always saw him as family and even called him a ‘dashing, cute little brother.’ At this, Asta solemnly accepted the rejection for the last time and vowed to become the Wizard King again.
