Although Jeff Trammel, showrunner ofYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, has been adamant about embracing New York City in the show, which is filled with different cultures, the show’s lead had a very contrasting viewpoint.
Hudson Thames, who previously appeared in the pilot ofGhost, is set to mark his Marvel return as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and ahead of the show’s release, the actor issued his one concern regarding the show.

Having previously voiced Spider-Man inWhat If,during an interview withCollider,Hudson Thamesrecounted fearing that the show“was gonna be annoying and woke”. However, according to him, the show wasn’t woke, stressing that he found the writing great, especially the teenage dynamic, which has been mostly skipped in the live-action adaptations in favor of more grand narratives.
I thought it was awesome. I mean,my biggest fear was that it was gonna be annoying and woke, and it wasn’t, and I was like, ‘Yes, this is great, it’s so well written,’ like it feels real. I’m the oldest of five boys, so I feel like I kind of know what’s happening in their lives and in high school, and it felt like it was doing that justice.
On the flip side, several fans have accused the show of being woke following Colman Domingo’scasting as Norman Osborn, which further adds to the absurdity of the woke argument.

Jeff Trammel wanted to get Peter Parker’s heart right in the show
Opposed to the lead’s concerns, Jeff Trammel has been pretty vocal about highlighting the aspect of Peter Parker that makes him stand out,“He’s a guy who cares”. Considering it’s Peter’s humanity that makes him special, which has inspired others to walk in his footsteps, Trammel expressed that he was adamant about getting the heart of the character right (viaGames Radar).
There’s a lot to Peter, but at the end of the day, he’s a guy who cares. He cares a lot. He cares, some would say, too much, but I think that’s the thing that ties us to Peter. He cares, and we all care, and we want to see him reach the finish line. We want to see him do the impossible.

The showrunner also assured fans that the new iteration will lean toward Peter Parker’s dorkiness, and hopefully, Spider-Man will once again inspire us to care for each other, irrespective of our differences.
