Cull has a pretty decent Cost to Power ratio, making him a heavy hitter in terms of mid-game plays. There are some risks that come along with his play, which will be outlined below.

Best Cull Obsidian Decks
Cull Obsidian has the potential to be a decent card, but his Power leaves him open toShang-Chi attacks. This aside, Cull has some interesting interactions with other deck archetypes. His Ability, “You can only play this where you have a 1-Cost card,” makes him great in a Thanos deck, which seems to be his intended use. Thanos decks aren’t the only way to use Cull though, asZoodecks andShuridecks also have space for a high-Power card which will be covered in the outlines below.

Cull Obsidian Thanos Deck
Thanosis a great option to pair with Cull Obsidian. Thanos will add the sixInfinity Stonesto the player’s deck at the start of a game. With six 1-Cost cards floating around, there is sure to be a lane where Cull is playable by turn four. The main goal of this deck is to throw downLockjawand follow up with low-cost Infinity Stones to increase the chance of pulling out a high-Power card.Skaaris included because his cost will be lower for each +10-Power card in play.
If cards likeJefforVisionare pulled out of the deck by Lockjaw, they can be moved to make room for more Infinity Stones. This greatly increases the likelihood of pulling high-Power cards onto the board.Killmongeris included to clear up any unwanted Infinity Stones from taking up precious space on the board. With so many 6-Cost cards included,Caierais a great potential swap if players are missing any of the ones listed.

Cull Obsidian Shuri Deck
This deck is full of interesting synergies and not just with Cull Obsidian. Cull is a great fit here because his low-Cost makes him a great candidate for Shuri’s Power-doubling On Reveal Ability. A turn-fourShuri, followed by a turn-five Cull, and finishing with a turn-sixTaskmastermeans players can throw down two 20-Power cards back to back. This is a hefty sum and is sure to carry a lane or two.
There are interactions that work well all throughout this deck, withArmorstoppingAttuma’s Ability,Zerocanceling out the negative effects ofTyphoid MaryandRed Skull, andZabulowering the Cost of the many 4-Cost cards included in the deck. One card not included in this deck that would be a useful swap if players are missing a card or two isMagik. Giving yourself an additional turn to make heavy plays with all of these high-Power cards is never a bad idea.

Cull Obsidian Zoo Deck
This deck relies on playing lots of 1-Cost cards and then boosting their Power using cards likeKa-Zar,Blue Marvel, and subsequentlyMystique.Caierais a must in this deck as she will protect the 1-Cost cards from being destroyed by Killmonger. There isn’t much in the way of high strategy here. The goal and victory condition is just to play as many 1-Cost cards as possible and boost their Power. It is usually enough to carry a lane or two, and Cull’s inclusion can give an additional lane the Power boost needed to win the game.

Best Cull Obsidian Counters
As with most +10-Power cards,Shang-Chiis going to pose a problem when playing Cull. Cull Obsidian has a unique conflict with Shang-Chi though. Because Cull is a 4-Cost card, he will usually be played on turn four, or five at the latest, which means the opponent has an additional turn to plan a Shang-Chi takedown. This is really where Cull Obsidian falls flat. If the card was a 9-Power card, it would have much more playability, but the 10-Power holds it back and leaves it susceptible to being destroyed. This would not be a huge issue if the card posed a potential benefit with an On Reveal Ability, but there isn’t one present. Since Cull isn’t 6-Cost, it also can’t be protected by Caiera which means the only way to prevent Shang-Chi’s attack isArmororCosmo, which makes the usability of Cull plummet.
Best Cull Obsidian Synergies
Cull Obsidian’s Ability means he really synergizes well with any 1-Cost card in the game (a full list of great 1-Cost options can be found below). Since this is true, it is also a great idea to play cards that help 1-Cost cards shine.Ka-Zar(On Reveal: Your 1-Cost cards have +1 Power) is a super useful card that can give your 1-Cost cards a boost in Power after it is played.
Some other cards that pair well are ones that spawn 1-Cost cards, making Cull easier to play. These are cards likeThanos(the clearly intended synergy with Cull Obsidian’s Black Order background),Shanna(she’s a pretty difficult-to-play card, but still useful with Cull), andSquirrel Girl. There are other options as well, but these three cards consistently make Cull’s play simpler.

Is Cull Obsidian Worth It?
Cull Obsidian is a card with a great Cost to Power ratio, but it is really hindered by its 10-Cost, vulnerability to Shang-Chi. This doesn’t mean the card is unusable, but it does mean there is a serious risk to playing him. For now,it is recommended that players skip this card release, saving their Spotlight Keys or Tokens for another, potentially more impactful, card release.
Cull Obsidian is released as a Series 5 card which means it will be obtainable in two different ways on launch day. Players can nab Cull from theSpotlight Cache using a Spotlight Key. He will be featured alongsideNimrodandThanos, two great cards in their own right. For players who already have those cards, the Spotlight variants can be seen in the image above. Players can also obtain Cull Obsidian from theToken Shopwhere he will be featured at release,costing 5,000 Tokens. This is a hefty cost for a card that will surely be included in a future Series Drop.
