ManyElder Scrolls Onlineplayers (and most of its streamers) received a curious letter in their regular mail this week. The ESO logo on the envelope flap was the indicator that these letters were official communications sent byBethesdaas part of a campaign to get players ready for what’s next for the game. An article fromEurogamerdescribes the letter, but can only speculate on its meaning.
The letter addresses the recipient as “Proxy,” and goes on to implore the reader’s talented services “for changing destiny.” The reader is being called to serve as a “surrogate in a crisis most perilous,” with only one of the forward-leading paths ending with the “survival of Nirn.” With the future of “at least two worlds” at stake, the reader is called to a quest to “keep reality itself from unraveling.” In conclusion, the reader is informed that they will be summoned “as soon as the inescapable fortunes of consequence” dictate such. The letter is signed by a Leramil the Wise, an as-yet-unrevealed character.

Elder Scrolls Online’s official forums have beenflooded with fan theoriesabout what this could possibly mean. The last hint from the letter is revealed when it is held up to a blacklight. It bears an insignia that looks very much like an open eye. The mark has been identified and confirmed as the sigil of Hermaeus Mora, one of theDaedricprinces.
Other than speculation, nothing else is known at this time, but there seems to be a lot of strong arguments for Hermaeus Mora being behind the letter from Leramil the Wise. Mora has appeared in several of the Elder Scrolls games, introduced inSkyrim’s Dragonborne expansion, and later found in Apocrypha within Oblivion. He is known as a “Demon of Knowledge,” but not necessarily wise, as Leramil claims to be.
For the time being, there is only the letter and the online forums to provide information. Now it’s just a matter of waiting for those “inescapable fortunes of consequence.”
