Anyone who has watched even a single Quentin Tarantino movie knows that no other director can ever replicate just how unique and mesmerizing his vision is. Even with a limited filmography, it never feels as if there are too few or too many of his movies. The range each of them provides showcases the kind of dedication not only the director puts into the project but also the entire cast and crew of the films.

FromPulp FictionandReservoir DogstoDjango UnchainedandOnce Upon a Time in… Hollywood;there is no film by Tarantino that has failed to impress the audience. His films are easily ahead of their time and in many cases service a theme that caught a growing mangaka’s eye.
Quentin Tarantino Inspired Kagurabachi
Hokazono Takeru, the author ofKagurabachi, talked about how the Shonen genre is spread to thin with action mangas. There are those that have the fans roaring with excitement and then there are those that simply do not make the cut no matter how much they try. They could be light-hearted in nature or dark, bending almost into horror.
Shonen Jump already has legendary manga like One Piece. I wanted to offer a new manga with my quiet, low-key, dark protagonist, and since Jump doesn’t have many revenge-themed manga, I created Kagurabachi.

One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen, Bleach, and evenChainsaw Manare some of the most unique stories told in the Shonen genre. However, they all have an aspiring protagonist who seeks greatness. There isn’t anything that takes a step back and questions if the character whose face would be defining the series could become darker.

To create something of his own, Takeru, as said during his interview with47 News, introduced the idea of a revenge story. For fans ofQuentin Tarantino, that idea isn’t something they are unfamiliar with. Works likeKill Bill,Django Unchained, andInglorious Basterdsunderstand that the classic revenge tale is his forte.
Bending Into Oriental Stereotypes
Kagurabachiisn’t just a classic revenge story. Hokazono Takeru didn’t want to make it simple either. The entire reason why Shonen is so famous is because of how grandiose the entire storytelling process is. To support that, he wanted to create a tale that would capture the perspective of a boy who was hungry for the blood of those who took his father’s life.
But I don’t want to make a simple story that sells the pleasure of revenge. I was influenced by Tarantino and David Fincher. Kagurabachi depicts an ‘exaggerated Japan’ like Hollywood films.

The mangaka found his inspiration in Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher. Seeing how they make their own revenge tales, it was to adapt and evolve Hollywood styles into his own handiwork. Takeru looked at the way Japan was extremely depicted in Hollywood films and instead of toning it down, chose to work on exactly that blueprint.

It helped create this sense of belongingness forKagurabachithat other mangas do not possess. While an anime adaptation is yet to be announced for the series, the fact that its illustrative prowess is already beyond expectation could only mean great things.
Kagurabachiis available to read on Viz Media.
