There’s no doubt that Steve Carell breathes life into his characters, making us fall in love with all of them. Even if the film doesn’t fare well at the box office or bring in positive comments from the critics, the actor somehow manages to deliver feel-good performances that we keep coming back to time and time again. Of course, it helps tremendously when he’s supported by co-actors as talented as Juliette Binoche.

Juliette Binoche specializes in drama, both in English and French languages. Therefore, when she starred alongside Steve Carell inDan in Real Life,it proved to be quite challenging for her, despite it being a much-lighthearted role than what she is used to.

Why Juliette Binoche FoundDan in Real LifeChallenging

Released in 2007,Dan in Real Lifeis an honorary Thanksgiving film filled with everything you need to make a perfect rom-com. Some love, a few drops of tears, and a whole lot of drama make this film the perfect Holiday watch.

Steve Carell’s titular character ends up falling in love with his brother’s girlfriend, Marie, played byJuliette Binoche. While fate and circumstances drive them apart, they eventually find their way back to each other and get the happy ending they deserve.

Binoche joinedColliderfor a discussion on her then-upcoming movie. When asked ifDan in Real Lifewas a much easier shoot as compared to her other intense films, the actress replied that it was actually the opposite.

Having done so many drama films where she can let the“horse inside”her run free, Binoche found comfort in the genre. Thus, when she signed up for Peter Hedges’ second directorial project, she found it to be a bit challenging.

She stated,

It was more difficult in a way because it’s like breaking the rule of my other like films, where I just plunge into it with a sort of an artistic rage somehow and this one I had to somehow have the horse inside me, but just controlling it a little more because it was, first of all I was part of the story and – this loving sort of a control because it’s his second film and it’s dangerous for him because he’s a very ambitious artist.

She even had to accustom herself to pages and pages of dialogue.

But he, I don’t know, I had to adjust myself because after the Hou Hsiao-hsien film (Flight of the Red Balloon) I was completely free, like not having any dialogue or anything. Suddenly I was like ‘OK this is page 1 – all the words have to be there’ so it was like an adjustment I had to make.

So, there you have it. While most actors would consider the comedy genre to be far less complicated, Binoche couldn’t help but feel a bit intimidated by it all.

What Was Working with Steve Carell Like?

Carell is obviously a connoisseur of the comedy genre. This is not even a debatable topic. Therefore, one might think that an actress who has mostly been in dramatic projects would find it a little daunting to work in a comedy film with him.

However, like the boss lady she is, Binoche was totally A-okay with it. When asked if there was any“improvisation”on set while working with Carell, she stated,“Not that much, no. It wasn’t improvised at all.”

She then recalled people asking her what it was like working with two comedians, and she replied,

You know, some people ask me ‘What was it to work with two comics’, you know, comedians, and it felt like ‘Well how does it feel for them to work with a dramatic actress?’ It was like two different worlds that have to meet.

Binoche also added that despite it being a comedy, the set was much more serious than one would think. Every actor was committed to the story and their characters, leaving no room for fooling around. She describes the experience as“very real.”
