Initially, the creators were hesitant to cast him in the project, but with his acting talent, he got on board to play Don Draper.
This character in itself had a lot of complexities, but Hamm played the role to the best of his abilities for not just one but seven seasons.

Jon Hammhas been a part of the Hollywood industry for several decades now and has worked across diverse genres. But in this, his most pivotal role can easily be that of Don Draper inMad Men. Draper had a lot of elements that fans loved, but also some in which his intentions were just straight-up problematic.
It was because of the latter that even Hamm detailed in an interview withTimewhy idolizing his character was not the right thing to do. In the said interview, the host asked the actor if he was at all surprised with how much the fans like Don Draper. He said:
But I’m always surprised when people are like, “I want to be just like Don Draper.” I’m like, “You want to be a miserable drunk?” I don’t think you want to be anything like that guy. You want to be like the guy on a poster maybe but not the actual guy. The actual guy’s rotting from the inside out and has to pull it together.
The actor further brought in other characters as well, with whom viewers often find themselves drawn on television. The first one he mentioned wasBryan Cranston‘s Walter White, and the next wasJames Gandolfini‘s Tony Soprano. He added howthese guys were murderers, but for the fans, there’s a thrill to watch these people commit bad things on television.

But the major element why they became fan favorites was that even though they are bad, they may show some redeeming qualities. He also added that the key theme of shows likeMad Menwas that, even though they might seem perfect on the outside. They are often deeply flawed underneath, and the glitz and glamour hide a much darker reality.
Jon Hamm Believes There’s More to Explore in His Character’s Relationship on The Morning Show
In the Emmy For Your Consideration event, viaThe Hollywood Reporter,Hamm detailed his opinion on the complex relationship dynamics between his character Paul Marks andJennifer Aniston‘s Alex Levy inThe Morning Show. The characters’ relationship took a blow at the end of season three of the show when Alex gets to know about Paul’s deceitful actions.
This leads to her breaking ties with him and further sabotaging his aspirations within the UBA network. However, Hamm doesn’t believe Alex and Paul’s relationship hasrun its courseand added:
For want of a better phrase, I don’t think the relationship has run its course yet. It’s unfinished business for sure. It’s not fulfilled. There is something there, there has to have been for it to mean that much to both of these people.
Jennifer Aniston also took over the mic and expressed her deep enthusiasm for the romantic plotlines in the show. She also highlighted the moral complexities that her character Alex faces while in a relationship with Hamm’s Paul Marks.
