For years, people have wondered about the mysterious playboy secret agent James Bond and his sexuality. Given his charming and alluring personality that can make any woman go mad, Bond’s sexuality has long been a topic of great debate since the inception of the modern world and ‘forward-thinking’.

While some like Daniel Craig are of the opinion that he would get with anyone, others believe Bond is an alpha masculine male who would not dabble with the said territory. Despite carrying opinions,Skyfallfeatured an interesting scene that hinted at 007’s bisexual nature. And consequently, it was also a scene that Barbara Broccoli had to fight to keep.
James Bond’sBisexual-esque Scene Was Almost Cut fromSkyfall
TheDaniel Craig-starrerSkyfallis widely hailed as one of the bestJames Bondmovies of all time. Filled with some incredible action scenes and Bond being portrayed in a new vulnerable light, the film enjoys everlasting popularity today. While there are many great elements to the film, one in particular, makes it even more enticing.
“No, that doesn’t work”: Skyfall Originally Planned Daniel Craig’s James Bond be Paired Up With Another ‘Alpha Male’ Character
At the start of the film, we do not get to meet the film’s notorious villain Raoul Silva. But when we do, the character (portrayed byJavier Bardem) and Bond’s meeting takes a bisexual-esque turn as the celebrated spy is seen tied to a chair and caressed by Silva.
You’re trying to remember your training now. What’s the regulation to cover this? Well, first time for everything I guess.— Asks the villain as Bond promptly replies:What makes you think this is my first time?

Thus hinting that he might have explored his sexuality more than we know about, theSkyfallscene has been widely debated for years. Despite formerJames BondstarPierce Brosnanonce claiming that long-timeBondproducer Barbara Broccoli would never let there be a gay bond (in an interview with Details, viaThe Guardian), Broccoli did in fact vehemently fight to keep theSkyfallscene in the film.
In the Apple TV+ documentary,Being James Bond, the acclaimed producer revealed that the studio wanted to cut the line but they fought hard to keep it in.

I remember we were told to cut that line by the studio and we said no, no, no.W resisted.
Fortunately for them, the scene and line became one of the highlights of the film, resulting in producing the desired effect the had wanted. As for the character’s sexuality, Daniel Craig, in a press conference of the filmonce famously remarkedthat Bond will f**k anything! (viaMovieline).

Bisexual Scene inSkyfallEnded Up Becoming the Highlight of the Film
While there was hardly any ‘bisexual-ness’ inSkyfall, a single dialogue ended up changing the whole persona of James Bond, making him even more mysterious as if we needed any more of that. Yet, the scene did not destroy the reputation of the famous fictional spy, instead, it ended up adding more intricacies to his character, attracting fans further.
“It was a very brief flirtation with that thought”: Skyfall Director Sam Mendes Had Plans For Original James Bond Actor Sean Connery To Fight Alongside Daniel Craig’s 007
Barbara Broccoli, in the Apple TV+ documentary, justified the presence of the scene by the reaction of the public at the film’s global premiere in London’s Royal Albert Hall, stating,
The night of the premiere, that line, just the whole place rocked it then … I remember looking at the studio executive [and] going, ‘See, told you.’

As for the director ofSkyfall, Sir Sam Mendes, he acknowledged that the small and subtle scene changed the entire persona of the character as a womanizer—I think there’s a huge homoerotic undertow in a lot of Bond movies.
While for the screenwriter John Logan, who was plagued by the speculation that he might be gay for writing the scene (he is not), stated toThe Hollywood Reporter,
Sam and I were discussing, there were so many scenes where Bond goes mano-a-mano with the villain… and there’s been so many ways to do a cat-and-mouse and intimidate Bond, and we thought, what would truly make the audience uncomfortable is s*xual intimidation; playing the sort of homoerotic card that is sort of always there subtextually… So we just decided that we should play the card and enjoy it.
Their card did work out, for this complexity allowed the audiences to view James Bond not just as a quintessential ladies’ man but as a multi-dimensional figure. Thus, breaking the mold of conventional portrayals of masculinity in action films, while at the same time creating an intimidating moment for the audience.
Skyfallis available to be streamed on Amazon Prime.
