True Detective: Night Countryis the fourth season of HBO’s prestige crime-drama series. The season followsJodie Fosterand Kali Reis as Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro and as they attempt to solve the murders of a group of researchers in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.
While the season-long mystery is resolved in the finale, some plot threads such as Navarro’s fate are left open to interpretation. During a recent interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, showrunnerIssa Lopezdiscussed the ending ofTrue Detective: Night Country. She stated the following regarding the ending’s ambiguity:
“It was an homage to many things. Some of the best Sherlock Holmes stories are the ones where he walks away after he finds the killer, shrugs his shoulders, and says, Well, I guess we’ll never know what happened.”

Lopez added that she felt one cannot always expect the justice system to come and impart justice, referencing the revelation of the truth behind Annie and the researcher group’s murders. She further expanded upon the idea of Indigenous women seeking justice for the murder of one of their own by adding:
“I thought it would be so interesting to have the women themselves step in and tell the story differently, and give it their own ending.”
Thus, Lopez wanted to tell a different type of story about justice and added a Sherlock Holmes-inspired ending to the narrative resulting in the hotly debated and ambiguous ending of the fourth season ofTrue Detective.

The season 4 finale also features a call back to one ofTrue Detectiveseason 1’s most iconic lines. Matthew McConaughey’s Detective Rustin “Rust” Cohle says the lines “Time is a flat circle,” which ties into the season’s overall theme and Cohle’s nihilistic ideas.
In theNight Countryseason finale, the same line is repeated again by Raymond Clark. In an interview withEntertainment Weekly, Lopez revealed why she chose to bring back the iconic line in the season 4 finale.
“It just came so naturally. And it is a scientist who says it because that concept is based in quantum physics. So it is a scientist who needs to say it.”

Lopez made the above statement explaining that the characters and their story organically led her to an epiphany. She noted that what she was trying to convey was best summed up by the iconic lines from season 1. Furthermore, Lopez also added that the line helped connect some of the motifs of the season such as the spiral and the cave that were linked to Annie.
