James Gunn has spearheaded the newly conceived DC Universe with much fervor and enthusiasm, as is evident from the first season of the animated series,Creature Commandos, and the trailer ofSuperman. The comic book studio finally seems to be headed toward a creatively rewarding future as the chief of DC Studios dreams big and isn’t afraid to take risks.

However, while DC is still a ways away from its grand opening in July 2025, the fans remain fixated on Gunn’s every move and decision, no matter how minor or benign. One of those decisions was to cast actors in one of the most anticipated films of the decade:Superman– a movie whose outcome has the power to make or break the DC comic book universe for good.
James Gunn’s DC Universe boasts a sensational dancer
Ballet may be one of the most sensational, rigorous, and difficult art forms to master and excel at. However, for some artistically inclined people, the dance form does not come off as a routine but as a liberation of one’s innermost senses and desires. TheX-MenactorNicholas Houltis one of those people.
Cast as the latest andmost terrifying villainsof the DC Universe, Hoult is set to star as Lex Luthor inJames Gunn‘s upcoming film,Superman. Acting as the foil toDavid Corenswet‘s titular superhero, the villainous persona presents a threat unlike any other in his rampage todestroy the Man of Steel, at whatever cost.

However, before he transformed himself into an icon of pop culture film history with his varied range in everything starting from arthouse cinema to blockbuster hits, Hoult was a proficient ballet dancer who not only excelled at the art form but also loved to perform in front of an audience.
Nicholas Hoult’s history as a ballet dancer unfolds
As a child born into a family of performers, Nicholas Hoult had no choice but to find an outlet for his artistic sensibilities from the earliest days of his childhood. His love for ballet became so entrenched into his DNA that Hoult nearly became a professional dancer before transitioning to acting after starring in the teen coming-of-age drama,Skins.

In an interview withThe Guardianin 2007, the actor revealed just how deeply involved he was with ballet before deciding to hang his spurs (or dancing shoes) for good:
I’ve done a bit of dancing. I was in Swan Lake the ballet and also the Nutcracker with the National Ballet. It was the opposite of Skins! I can’t even remember how I got into it, to be honest, I just ended up doing it. I just got on stage and it was a real kick doing ballet before a live audience.

Despite being in high-profile troupes and even on the National Ballet in his youth, ballet failed to hold him down. After finding himself getting more enamored with the world of glamorous make-believe, Nicholas Hoult started to build his profile as an actor.
After finding his big break inAbout a Boy, he slowly rose from indie films to box office blockbusters like theX-Menfranchise,Mad Max: Fury Road, and most recently,Nosferatu.

His upcoming film,Superman, is set to premiere on June 18, 2025.
