Sugar comes to Los Angeles with a distinct outsider perspective, something that’s further amplified and enhanced by Fernando Meirelles, the Oscar-nominated Brazilian filmmaker best known for the classic filmsCity of GodandThe Two Popes. Naturally, there is a lot of hype and anticipation considering the pedigree of the filmmaker.

“He just came to L.A. with this curiosity. He had no bias, he had no knowledge of it. He was just really curious and he found it head-scratching. I’ve lived in L.A. for 20 years, and I also find it head-scratching, but just by virtue of living here for two decades, I’m more used to it, and of course, a little bit more jaded by it. But Fernando was like a kid.”
Farrell thinks L.A. is the perfect setting for a character like Sugar to explore since he describes the detective as “a keen observer of human behavior.”
“There’s nowhere really more fascinating in so many different ways in the world than this city,” Farrell notes. “It’s so kaleidoscopic.”
