Remember the times when Levi was the first face that came to fans’ minds wheneverAttack on Titanwas mentioned in a conversation? Well, things might not have changed much since then, as Levi is easily one of the most iconic anime characters of all time. Hajime Isayama embodied menace, strength, and all things likable with Levi Ackerman.

However, Isayama’s initial plans on how to bring Levi’s character arc to a close would likely upset most of his fans. He planned to give the fan-favorite character a meaningless death, as shared by the editor during an interview. Before Levi fan girls head out to show their gratitude to the editor who saved their beloved character, here’s what Isayama planned initially.
Attack on TitanEditor Shintaro Kawakubo Saved Levi From Isayama
Among the few survivors at the end ofAttack on Titanwas Levi Ackerman. With how mercilessHajime Isayamahad been with his characters, fans weren’t sure of anyone’s survival. Most deaths in the series were either shocking or sorrowful, or a mixture of both. Levi’s would have been all of that and devastating.
Even more so, if it had no impact or meaning. Shintaro Kawakubo, the editor ofAttack on Titan, shared that Isayamawas contemplating if he should kill Levi as he seemed to believe that it would be fine whether he died or stayed alive.

It’s okay to have a story where Levi dies.
What changed Isayama’s mind was a discussion with Kawakubo. Apparently, the conclusion of that discussion rendered Levi’s death meaningless and made Isayama reconsider his choice.
Hajime Isayama Might Have Never Been Able to Make it So Big if Attack on Titan Didn’t Make One Significant Change that Saved the Anime
If Levi had died, fans wouldn’t have been surprised as most of them expected him to die at some point in the story. However, if his death had been meaningless, the outrage would be unmatched.
Most Fans Expected Levi to Die
ThroughoutAttack on Titan, Isayama kept fans at the edge of their seats with the sudden deaths. The Titans were formidable, and the humans were too weak in comparison, so nobody was safe. One mistake meant death and a brutal one at that. Many characters met their ends in the blink of an eye. For instance, Isyama introduced Levi squad like they were going to stick around forever.

However, he killed them soon afterward. Their loss wasn’t only shocking but a reminder that the world ofAttack on Titanwas unforgiving. Fans expected Levi to die at some point in the story, as dying in battle would perfectly fit his life as a warrior. However, what kept him alive until the very end was his strength. He was superior to most even against the invincible Titans.
He pushed through until the end and saw the conclusion of the battle they had been fighting for years. He stood strong in Erwin’s and many other warriors’ stead. His power left him all alone in the end, but it was something that made sense after the journey he had. While most fans expected him to die at some point, his loss would have shattered hearts beyond repair. The only silver living then would have been his reunion with his comrades.
