Saoirse Ronan just put into words what women have to go through on almost a daily basis.

Throughout the years, we have come to terms with the fact that the world is simply not a safe place for women. The thoughts of being attacked or taken advantage of are constantly lurking in the back of our minds. It is this fear that draws women to learn self-defense and come up with ridiculous ideas to save themselves from a potential attacker, even if it means turning something as harmless as a mobile phone into a weapon.
Thus, when Paul Mescal joked about the potential use of mobile phones to fend off an attacker, Saoirse Ronan was not impressed. Despite the couch laughing at his joke, it didn’t take the actress long to silence the guests with her nonchalant yet extremely thought-provoking remark. The moment even takes us back in time to when actress Lily Tomlin walked off an interview after a tasteless comment.

Saoirse Ronan’s Truth Bomb onThe Graham Norton Show
The popular and extremely loved talk show,The Graham Norton Show, welcomedSaoirse Ronan,Paul Mescal,Denzel Washington, andEddie Redmayneto its latest episode.
Redmayne will soon be seen in the British series,The Day of the Jackal, where he plays the role of a brutal assassin. In order to get into his titular character, he revealed that he was taught how to use his phone as a weapon in case someone attacks him. As per the technique, you can use the butt of your phone to hit the person in the throat.

While this sounds rather genius to us, Mescal interrupted Redmayne joking,“Who’s actually going to think about that? If someone attacked me, I’m not going to go, ‘Phone.’”While the joke sent everyone into laughter, Ronan sat there unimpressed.
After the laughter died down, she simply stated,“That’s what girls have to think about all the time. Am I right, ladies? It’s true though.”Ronan’s brilliant remark was enough to cause a pin-drop silence at the studio for a couple of moments and rightly so.

Ronan is not wrong, at all. From wrapping your keys around your fingers to checking your car thoroughly for intruders before getting in, even the simplest of things matter when women are out alone. Therefore, using a phone as your primary weapon might really not be as funny as it seemed to Mescal and the others.
Saoirse Ronan Reminds Us of Lily Tomlin
It’s about time women take a stand against tasteless remarks from those around them, even if they were made innocently. Mescal probably had no ill intentions when he made the joke, but this is a grave reminder that the world is quite different for a man and a woman. Therefore, it is best to chime in and call each other out when we find our friends slipping.
This moment onThe Graham Norton Showtakes us back to 1972 when Chad Everett andLily Tomlinappeared onThe Dick Cavett Show.During the episode, Everett talked about all kinds of animals he owned, and the list for some reason included his wife…

He stated,“I have three horses and three dogs, and a wife,”followed by an awkward murmur in the crowd. Even when the host tried to give him a chance to go back on his words asking,“You want to think about the billing order there?”Everett double-downed on his comment with,“No, no, she’s the most beautiful animal I own.”Yikes.
While the crowd was clearly uncomfortable with the crass remark, Tomlin couldn’t just sit there and smile. She stated,“You own? I have to leave”and walked off the stage. Watch the clip below:

Nothing to see here, just Tomlin and Ronan being absolute girl bosses in their respective interviews!
