I think there’s only one trilogy that completely and utterly works to the nth degree and that’s A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good and the Bad and the Ugly.

Tarantino stated the above about the trilogy of Spaghetti Western films directed by Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone and starringClint Eastwoodas the iconic Man With No Name. He continued:

Jamie Foxx in Django Unchained

It takes the whole idea to such a bigger canvas that it obliterates the first one wow and then the third one.

Tarantino explained that he enjoyed the franchise, primarily because Leone’s vision anchors it. However, each film was made on a bigger canvas and outdid the previous installment.

Quentin Tarantino’s Compliment is Rare Respect For the Spaghetti Western Genre

Tarantino citingSergio Leone‘sDollarstrilogy is a rare occurrence of praise for the genre of Spaghetti Westerns. The genre is similar to the brooding American Westerns, but the term primarily refers to Westerns produced outside America, mainly in Europe.

American film critics have largely looked down upon the films in the subgenre since its boom during the 1960s. TheDollarstrilogywas a major reason for the popularity of Spaghetti Western films. However, the movies were generally considered invasive of American culture.

The films werecriticizedfor being boring, repetitive, and sometimes derogatory and racist. Nonetheless, the Spaghetti Western genre has earned a cult classic status, proving that Tarantino’s praise is justified. The filmmaker alluded to the disregard for the genre in his 2019 filmOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Similarly, his 2012 revisionist WesternDjango Unchained, also alludes to one of the most popular characters from the Spaghetti Western genre. Hence, it is safe to say that Tarantino, one of the finest filmmakers of our time, was inspired by the genre, which itself is a huge compliment.
