One Piecehas just picked up the heat with the Devil Fruit transformation of the hidden World Government’s monarch, Imu. In an attempt to escape, Sabo unleashes his Mera Mera no Mi. Still, the young man is going against the Five Elders and Imu, who all transform into their shadowy and intimidating forms.

Sabo faces the Five Elders and Imu.

While the Five Elders are assumed to have Mythical Zoan Devil Fruits based on how their transformations are based on various yokai creatures in Japanese folklore, Imu’s transformation is so vague and weird that we can’t decipher what the shape is. Eiichiro Oda really is leaving the monarch a mystery until the very end ofOne Piece.

Is Imu a Type of Frog Yokai inOne Piece?

Eiichiro Odahas kept Imu’s identity, from gender to Devil Fruit, under tight wraps. We still don’t know their true motives other than the fact that the leader shows glee and no guilt when destroying whole islands populated with citizens. Aside from their cruelty, they harbour hatred for the Will of D. members and legendary figures like Joy Boy and Nefertari D. Lili. In the most recent episode ofOne Piece, fans finally witnessed their transformation and have a few theories on what they might be.

Imu took the form of something with frog-like limbs and head but with sharper teeth. Moreover, the monster form had a typical demonic tail with a pointed sharp end that they used to pierce Sabo. Fans are assuming Imu to be a “frog demon” and while the demon part is certainly true, the silhouette was too vague to be certain it’s a frog.

There are types of frog-like yokai in Japanese folklore and one in particular is a strong candidate for what Imu’s Devil Fruit is. Anōgamais a giant toad that gets more dangerous the larger they get. They also notoriously can disguise themselves as humans, perhaps something Imu can achieve. They also rarely come in contact with humans, another characteristic they have in common with Imu. Is it possible that Oda has based Imu on this yokai?
