Nobody can forget the dark days whenGame of Thronesswayed away from the source material to continue the story on screen. Far away from the commonsensical plot points and nuanced character trajectories, the creators ofGame of Thronescharted their own path just to cap the narrative on screen.

The result? A season devoid of any intricate connections to the overarching world created by George R.R. Martin in hisA Song of Ice and Firebooks. Fans of the series were disappointed beyond repair when the last season butchered the legacy of the show that remained flawless until then. But there’s one plot hole in the story that even the most ardent fans cannot forgive and overlook.
The Night King plot hole inGame of Thrones
From the very first episode, the fantasy showGame of Thronescreated a narrative that presented a dark and mysterious world beyond the wall, where death and danger awaited. We were familiarized with the White Walkers, half-dead creatures that came back from the dead to haunt the world of the living. If they didn’t wreak enough havoc, their leader aka the Night Kingwas also added to the mix to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.
However, the Night King was not a concept that originated fromGeorge R.R. Martin’sbooks. He never mentions a leader of the pack or a King who rules the undead. The creators ofGame of Throneswanted to put a face to the entire horde of zombie-like creatures and hence they welcomed the Night King into the mix. With him, came a whole lot of ambiguities because, unlike other characters, he did not have a strong foundation linked to the entire series.

The starkest difference came in one of the last episodes where the fight between humanity and the White Walkers culminated in a final showdown. Armies from around Westeros came together to fight the creatures and reclaim the world beyond the wall. Jon Snow quickly figured out the link between the Night King and the others, as he formulated a plan to erase him and his disciples will follow suit.

Everyone knew the two weaknesses of White Walkers – fire and dragon glass. Their entire battle strategy hinged on these aspects as they stood steadfast on the battlefield, ready to avenge their lost comrades. Snow further learned that Valyrian steel is another weakness of the creatures. While dragonfire had almostno effect on the Night King, Arya was able to kill the menacing being with a stab of Valyrian steel.
George R.R. Martin needs to address this plot hole inThe Winds of Winter
Even though Martin never mentions the Night King in his novels, fans believe he can include the mystery in his world-building to resolve the issue once and for all. Dragons, made with blood and fire magic, were not able to kill the Night King, whereas a stab from a Valyrian sword made him crumble to ashes.
This plot hole has been nagging in the minds ofGame of Thronesfans for years. This, coupled with a mindless ending to the entire exciting saga, led to the downfall ofGame of Thronesas a show. Despite enjoying the highest fame and popularity all through its run, the last season truly maligned the legacy of the show.

“Star Wars kills more characters than I do”: George R.R. Martin Explains 1 Game of Thrones Formula Star Wars Should’ve Used to Make Alderaan’s Death Impactful
When Martin finishes penningThe Winds of Winter, which has been in the works for over a decade, fans hope he addresses this concern and gives a satisfactory explanation for the same.
Even as for the fate of the Iron Throne, Martin should have a good ending to the saga, something that readers and viewers alike have been waiting for years. We believe this can all be explained better if the author sheds light on the making and history of Valyrian steel as it will certainly put things into perspective.
