Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter was and still is a big name in the music business. Today, we can see theEmpire State of Mindrapper basking in the solace of success along with his wife Beyoncé, who also boasts multiple accolades for her work in the music industry just like him.

But there was a time when Jay-Z struggled to get signed by record labels and things weren’t looking too great for his aspirations as a rapper. This was one of the reasons that led to the creation of Roc-A-Fella Records. Carter, along with record executives Dame Dash and Kareem Burke started the label under which he released his debut albumReasonable Doubt.
While the company functioned for nearly two decades before going defunct, there was a disagreement between Carter and Dash that would’ve ended things much earlier.

Dame Dash made a massive claim that suggests Jay-Z wanted Kanye West away from the rap business
Roc-A-Fella had many artists signed under them, and whoever they represented found great success over time. The company boasted a roster of artists like Cam’ron, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, Juelz Santana, Jadakiss, and The Diplomats. However, Kanye West was probably the biggest they’d ever signed.

But before welcoming Ye into their family, Dame Dash claimed that he had to fight to convinceJay-Zof the rapper’s potential. According toHipHopDX, Dash went on an Instagram Live rant about the feud. He said,
I almost couldn’t sign Kanye. I had to get a vote. I had to fight to put Kanye out. I had to fight Lyor [Cohen] and JAY-Z. They didn’t want that man to come out.

Ye had already established himself as a talented producer, but he didn’t get much of an opportunity to showcase his ability in rap. It’s quite possible that Ye was only signed to Roc-A-Fella to keep him away from rival labels.
Jay-Z refuted Dame Dash’s claims regarding their feud over Kanye West
It’s unclear what actually resolved the disagreement between Jay-Z and former his business partner, but the 54-year-old Grammy-Award winner cleared the air regarding his side of the story during an interview withXXL Magazinein 2009.
Carter claimed that neither he nor his partners truly knew whatKanye Westwould’ve brought to the table as a rapper. The rapper claimed that he wasn’t against signing Ye but had a completely different plan for him in mind.

So we all sat down and said, ‘Let’s at least sign so we can keep the tracks in-house. It’s only good business.’ And Dame said, ‘We can put Beans and Cam, surround him, and make this type of album.’ I wasn’t saying don’t sign Kanye; I was saying, at least keep the beats in-house, if anything.
Ye eventually joined as an in-house producer who holds credits to Jay-Z’s 2001 album,The Blueprint. West also worked alongside multiple other musicians who were signed to the label before notching a deal as an artist under Roc-A-Fella in the 2000s.
