One of the reasons behindHell’s Paradise‘s inevitable success was the plethora of characters and their battles within the series that added more thrill to the story. These battles were a little different than the manga’s narrative, as it made the characters look more human. Kaori Makita, the director of the anime series, once revealed the reason behind making this change.

The director is known for her contribution to many prominent series likeAttack on Titan, Yuri!!! on Ice,etc. She talked about her experience while working onHell’s Paradiseand how it led to the series becoming one of the greatest anime of 2023.

Two years ago, when theHell’s Paradiseanime series came out, Makita was interviewed byReal Soundwhere she revealed a bunch of details relating to the production of the anime. The Japanese director was asked about the action and battle scenes of the series and how she managed to make them so realistic while still maintaining the thrill.

Makita stated:

Of course, I was conscious of interpreting the trajectory of the characters’ movements in the frames drawn by Kaku (Yuji) sensei and making them look cool. However, even in those battles, there are aspects of “Gamimaru as a ninja” and “Sagiri as a samurai.” In that respect, I wanted to make it feel down to earth, so I was conscious of adding emotion to the action scenes that were omitted in the original.

According to the director, she was well-versed in the characters’ movements and their creation byYuji Kakuin the manga frames. She knew that the anime wouldn’t be able to replicate them so easily, so she decided to make it feel down to earthby adding emotions to the scenes.

These emotions were removed from the original storyline but it worked in the favor of the anime and for the characters. She made sure that the action sequences had a feeling of emotion within that would not only make the characters look cool but also highlight their moments of power.

Kaori Makita hoped to add anime-like fun to the story

While talking about her process of creating the battle scenes of theHell’s Paradiseanime series, Makita pointed out that the movements were quite difficult to create as they were quite fantastical considering the theme of the story. However, it also became the reason why she felt that adapting it into an anime would work out.

It was difficult to make it into an anime because it has quite fantastical and non-human movements. But that’s why I think it makes sense to make it into an anime. I think it would be fine to do a live-action version of a normal sword fight, but I hope to add some anime-like fun to it.
