For years now,Supernaturalhas given its audience a reason to be sad about its incohesive ending. The CW flagship series that began its journey in 2005 with brothers Sam and Dean Winchester, portrayed by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles respectively, tagging along on a wild ride, came to a polarizing close in 2020 – 15 years after the show first aired.

In the initial blueprints, the story of the Winchester brothers was due to be concluded by 2010. However, series creator Erik Kripke’s plans hit a snag when the popular show refused to end with itsSwan Songepisode in Season 5. With a new showrunner picking up the series from where it left off,Supernaturaltook on a whole new meaning when the beloved series proved that moving on doesn’t always mean leaving the past behind.
SupernaturalFinds Its Strength in Simplicity
At its core,Supernaturalhas no qualms about the story it wants to tell. With monsters to kill, evil archangels to defeat, and conniving demons to outwit, the brothers (and Castiel) are out on the road and ready to hunt at a moment’s notice. However, as the story begins to delve deeper and the world of the supernatural starts to collude with biblical elements, the Winchester boys are no longer a fun duo hunting vampires and tracking poltergeists.
By the third season,Supernaturalevolved into a family-oriented drama that delved deeper into the bond of the two brothers, their effort to save the world from the Devil aka Lucifer himself, and prevent the apocalypse. After writer-showrunnerErik Kripkewas done with his five-year vision,Supernaturalgranted reprieve to the boys in their sixth go-around by ditching the latest model of season-long storytelling and going back to the basics.

“It inspired the entire show”: The $131M Jack Black Franchise Eric Kripke Credits for Inspiring Supernatural is Actually 51 Years Old
AsJensen Acklesrecalled in the press run ahead of the series’s anticipated comeback in its sixth season, the reason why the show worked so well for the viewers was because of its emotional core embedded within crisp episodes that kept the story entertaining yet meaningful. In simplicity,Supernaturalfound its strength and refused to stray from the path until the series began to blur the lines between family and biblical catastrophe in the latter seasons.
Jensen Ackles Presents His Vision forSupernatural
In an interview withCollider, actor Jensen Ackles who portrays Dean Winchester inSupernatural(and more recently, Soldier Boy inThe Boys) helped decipher a crucial piece of the puzzle that represents the guiding motto of the series since its conception in 2005.
Ackles believes thatSupernaturalis not a story that follows a singular goal of eliminating the Devil and preventing the end of the world. Instead, the CW show follows the story of two brothers and their angelic third wheel who are out and about in the coolest Chevy Impala in television history, listening to rock songs, healing each other’s trauma, and hunting monsters every week.

Season 1 is still my favorite season because of the formula. I like the monster-of-the-week thing. I like the simpleness of that story and the way it was. We’ve had five years with these guys, so we’ve had all of that history, and now we’re getting back to square one and widdling it back down to its simplest form, and I just like that formula better.
Supernatural: Eric Kripke Admitted Having “Huge gaping holes” in Early Season Scripts, But it’s for a Reason
By its sixth season, Sam and Dean were changed people after having spent some time apart, and yet, the brothers still found their way back to each other and to life on the road. In its essence,Supernaturalalways found a way to tug at the heartstrings and the decision to take the boys on a 15-year-long journey instead of ending it in 5 had been the best one of all.
Supernaturalis currently streaming on Netflix.
