What made Plaza stand out from other characters in the series was her deadpan demeanor. Not many could pull off such a part and it is mostly thanks to Plaza’s personality in real life. The actress mentioned that though she is not exactly like April in reality, the perception of that has helped her in exploring different parts.

But the more I played that character, I realized: ‘Oh wow, people really think I’m just like this all the time.’ It’s strange, but I have actually found it useful in getting other work. I thought: ‘Anything I do differently from this is always going to surprise them.’ And it’s starting to work.

The roles she picks now might border on the weird and macabre but are still not as deadpan and morbid as April Ludgate.

Aubrey Plaza’s April Ludgate was the audience in a way as she witnessed therest of the castthrough a rational and almost outsider lens. Plaza revealed that her first time meeting showrunners Greg Daniels and Mike Schur was extremely odd and she showed up to the sets of their other showThe Officein jeans, unaware that it was going to be an audition. She recalled that Schur claimed she was the weirdest person he met and even recounted the conversation she had with Daniels (viaThe New Yorker),

I don’t remember who started the conversation, but one of us said something along the lines of ‘What do you think happens when we die?’ Just an easy softball question. I also think there was a yo-yo involved—there was something that we were passing back and forth.

Plaza also theorized that she was given the role because she did not act desperate for it like the other candidates. She was also reportedly the one who suggested April be an intern straight out of college.
