Nicole Kidman took a dig at Martin Scorsese when she hinted that the legendary director doesn’t make films with strong female characters. It has been a criticism that was leveled against Scorsese a few other times. Meryl Streep echoed the same sentiments earlier in 2011 when she shared that she would like to see Scorsese interested in a female character once in a while.

However, the whole drama brings up another interesting perspective about female directors. Kidman had pledged to work with more female directors since 2017 and fans can safely say that she kept her word. In a truly iconic moment,Spider-Manactress Kirsten Dunst once told her fellow actresses that they had to start looking for women-led projects.
Kirsten Dunst’s Take On Female Directors Gain Relevance Amid Nicole Kidman-Martin Scorsese Drama
Nicole Kidman‘s skepticism aboutMartin Scorsese‘s female characters is the new hot topic. Dunst spoke up and shared that she had worked with a bunch of female directors. She listed her various projects with Sofia Coppola, Leslye Headland, and Kate and Laura Mulleavy. She shared that it was up to them as actresses to give more opportunities to female directors, citing that most of those whom she worked with were first-time directors.
The Power of the Dogactress also shared that she had worked with too many male directors and wanted to balance it out with projects from female directors. She suggested to her fellow actresses that they should look for and pick up projects helmed by females. Dunst shared in THR Roundtable (via Sundance TV):

I’ve worked with so many female directors. I have really strong female relationships. Sofia Coppola obviously… I’m gonna work with her again this year. My girlfriends [Kate and Laura Mulleavy] who did their first movie. I’ve done Leslye Headland. Like I’ve worked with so many female directors and I think it’s up to us as actresses to give the opportunity to first-time directors. I mean most of those people, it was their first time.
And also sometimes I’m just like, ‘I just want to work with women. I’m done. I don’t want to work with all these dudes all the time.’ And then I find it. You just got to find it and create it for yourself.

Nicole Kidman has made efforts in this regard as she pledged to work with more women directors during Variety’sScreening Seriesof her filmDestroyerin 2017. She shared that if she had the chance to greenlight a project, she would choose a female to direct it. Kidman shared (via Variety):
As a woman in this industry, if you have a little power, if you have the chance to get something greenlit, if you have the chance to say who you want to direct it, if you go, ‘I want a female to do this,’ that will help.

Kidman is looking to enter the Oscar race with her role in the 2024 erotic thrillerBabygirl. The film is helmed by Dutch actress and filmmaker, Halina Reijn. Kidman already won the Volpic Cup for Best Actress for the film at the recently concluded Venice Film Festival.

Scorsese also has several biopic projects about different men, from boxer Jake LaMotta to former stockbroker Jordan Belfort.
