Why DidThe PrestigeAuthor Choose Christopher Nolan Over Sam Mendes?
During an interview withSKRIPT, the British novelist Christopher Priest opened up about why he chose to entrust the adaptation of his novel to Christopher Nolan over acclaimed director Sam Mendes.“I don’t think he knows that,”he said, recalling the process. Priest shared that he received three offers for the novel’s rights.
One of them was from theSkyfalldirector Sam Mendes, fresh from the success ofAmerican Beauty.The movie won five Oscars at the 72nd Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture. Priest suggested that he almost gave the rights to Mendes, saying,“It was going to be his next film after American Beauty, so I was keen on that.”
However,Christopher Nolanwas still not ready to back out and made a bold move. The filmmaker’s team sent the author a VHS copy of his 1998 crime thriller,Following, with a note that said,“Watch this film, and try to imagine what the filmmaker can do with a Hollywood facilities behind him.”
Nolan’s 1998 crime thriller explores the consequences of a writer’s obsession with following strangers. The 80-year-old author shared that he watched the movie and decided to take a chance with the young and talented filmmaker, believing that he was probably going to be good.

Christopher Priest Got Pretty Critical of Christopher Nolan’s Work
Priest’s belief in Christopher Nolan was fruitful. Starring an ensemble cast including Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, and Scarlett Johansson, the 2006 psychological thriller received positive receptions and made $109 million at the box office. Having two Oscar nominations,The Prestigeis still considered to be one of the best works of the filmmaker.
While Christopher Priest acknowledges it, he is not a big fan of Nolan’s other work.“I think its probably his best film, [along] with Memento,”he said before adding,“I don’t like his other work.”The author shared that he finds the rest of his work“shallow and badly written.”
