Denzel Washington has won two Academy Awards in his career after earning a total of ten nominations. For the filmGlory, he earned his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. After that 1990 win, Washington put in his best efforts to win another Oscar. During this period, he almost gave up on his Oscar dream after coming so close to winning the Best Actor twice.

Washington recently opened up about his feelings during this period, sharing that he was a bit cold towards the Academy. His luck turned around with the 2001 film,Training Day, for which he won the Best Actor award. He became the second Black actor after Sidney Poitier to win the Best Actor Oscar.

In the 2002 Academy Awards, it was no pity party for Denzel Washington. For playing the corrupt LA cop Detective Alonzo Harris in Antoine Fuqua’sTraining Day, Washington took home the Oscar for Best Actor. In the years following his win, he has been nominated four times for Best Actor.

According toVariety‘s ranked list of Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actor category, Denzel Washington is their number one pick to win. He is currently receiving all the praise from critics for his role as Macrinus in Ridley Scott’sGladiator II. In the film, the cunning and ambitious Macrinus plans to overthrow the ruthless twin rulers of Rome and seize power for himself using Lucius as a pawn.

Washington nails his role as the sly character in the film. The actor brings his Shakespearian experience to the role and commands the viewer’s attention in every scene that he appears.
