Yoshihiro Togashi, the legendary mangaka ofHunter x Hunter, has never once shied away from expressing admiration for other manga artists and their works. He is friends with other iconic mangaka like Masashi Kishimoto and Eiichiro Oda, the creators ofNarutoandOne Piece. In a surprising turn of events, Togashi also enjoys genres beyond what he’s used to. This interview with the mangaka ofKuroko’s Basketball,Tadatoshi Fujimaki, reveals Togashi’s love for his sports manga.

The protagonist of Hunter x Hunter, Gon Freecss.

TheHunter x Huntermangaka had a surprising way of appreciating sports anime and this includes how and who he supports inKuroko’s Basketball.Despite the story being made to root for Kuroko and Seirin High, Togashi opted to feel otherwise and have a bias toward other teams.

Yoshihiro Togashi Appreciates AllKuroko’s BasketballCharacters

In competitive sports anime, most fans have a favorite team that they root for but in the end, we are meant to cheer on the main team. Main character syndrome, after all, means the ultimate winner will be their team andKuroko’s Basketballis the perfect example of it. While Seirin High did face some losses, their win against Akashi’s team, Rakuzan High, felt unrealistic. The players of Seirin High didn’t seem strong enough yet, despite their training.

Yoshihiro Togashialso felt that the opposing characters were worthy rivals to Kuroko and Seirin High. Sometimes, he wishes the main team would lose as he seems to favor the opponents in a twist of events. Inan interview alongside Tadatoshi Fujimaki, he says:

When I was reading the first chapter, I thought “This is intetesting!” The character distinctions and the development are great. And there are also good opposing characters like Murasakibara, and I really wanted to read the continuations quickly. To tell the truth, I actually want Kuroko and the rest to lose, and I am reading this manga with a bias towards the opponents (laugh). The amazing thing about “Kuroko no Basket” is that it doesn’t rely on one powerful super move to dominate the match, or letting the protagonist win the match by using a more powerful move than the opponent. Because it doesn’t use such a direct path, even if the team that the readers like loses, they will still feel comfortable about it.

The Generation of Miracles in Kuroko’s Basketball.

His thoughts onKuroko’s Basketballare unique. With plot armor like Seirin High’s, it’s a given they will win so anybody rooting for other teams is already used to it knowing they all are strong players to be proud of.

What Togashi’s Thoughts Reveal AboutKuroko’s Basketball’sStorytelling

While it’s arguable that the players don’t rely on powerful moves to win the match, Togashi is correct in stating that both defeat and victory are meaningful inKuroko’s Basketball.Every outcome, no matter who you root for, is earned and satisfies its audience.

Togashi’s honesty in having a bias towards Kuroko’s opponents rather than Kuroko himself is also refreshing to see. While many fans might instinctively root for the main protagonist, the cast of characters make it hard to like just one team. His thoughts showcase how engaging the narrative and competition ofKuroko’s Basketballis.
