We have finally seen some dragon action inHouse of the DragonSeason 2, and we are hoping that there’s more to come in the third installment that will feature some of the greatest battles during the Dance of the Dragons.

In the previously concluded season, we have witnessed one of the most intense aerial duels in history: the Battle at Rook’s Rest. Sunfyre, Vhagar, and Meleys proved that dragons are creatures we should not mess with.

Why Sunfyre is the Real MVP inHouse of the Dragon

King Aegon II’s dragon, the beautiful golden-scaled Sunfyre, was one of the most formidable dragons in Westeros. After many assaults and battles, it managed to survive despite sustaining severe wounds. In fact, there’s a meme going around the Internet that he could be the next successor to Balerion the Black Dread, which was ridden byAegon the Conqueror.

As compared to Syrax, the dragon of Rhaenyra, Sunfyre was considered a survivor. His first major fight was against Rhaenys’ Meleys. The show had a different approach as compared withGeorge R.R. Martin’s novel,Fire & Blood. In the book, Meleys was attacked by both Sunfyre and Aemond’s Vhagar, while in the television adaptation, Aegon turned up in the battle unexpectedly while Aemond shockingly attacked his own brother and his dragon, leaving both of them injured.

It is worth noting that Sunfyre is not a large dragon, and unlike Vhagar and Meleys, he was not battle-hardened. Still, he was able to survive the fall by resting on the outskirts of Rook’s Rest and feeding on the burned carcasses of the slain soldiers.

The show is yet to interpret the events that happened after Rhaenyra successfully took King’s Landing from the Greens, so the following events are what happened in Martin’s prequel novel. Sunfyre showed remarkable resilience, and after recuperation, he managed to escape and be reunited with Aegon II on Dragonstone.

Sunfyre had a crucial role during the fall of Dragonstone, the seat of the Targaryen dynasty. Aegon flew his dragon to meet Baela’s Moondancer. As the fight ensued, Sunfyre emerged victorious after blasting his opponent with golden flames. Unfortunately, the poor beast received more injuries and left him flightless.

Before Aegon II’s dragon met his death, he was still able to make one last act of loyalty to his rider. Although he was too weak to move, he burned Rhaenyra and devoured her in six bites. The feral beast never recovered from his wounds, which caused his imminent death.

Although Sunfyre was not as colossal as Balerion and definitely had not fought as many battles as Aegon the Conqueror’s mount, the dragon was a fierce fighter who survived several attacks despite its size.

Syrax, on the other hand, has no battle experience. If Meleys was no match for Vhagar, then it certainly cannot stand a chance against the Queen of All Dragons. It’s also frustrating because, in Season 1, it was mentioned that she is growing fast and is expected to be as large as Daemon’s Caraxes. In Season 2, she hardly seems to have grown since her introduction. Rhaenyra’s dragon will die in the aftermath of the storming of the Dragonpit fighting off the rioters.

That being said, the meme above shows some grain of truth. Both Sunfyre and Syrax are not designed for battles, but the golden beast proved that he could give a fight when the need arises.

What Happens to the Other Dragons inHouse of the Dragon?

It’s a painful sight every time we see a dragon die, but it’s already a given fact that all of these fire-breathing creatures introduced inHouse of the Dragonwill eventually die one way or another, leading to their extinction.

One of the most highly anticipated events in the upcoming seasons is the duel between Vhagar and Caraxes. The Battle Above the Gods Eye will see Daemon and Aemond lock horns, eventually falling to their deaths. The larger dragon will not survive the attack and the fall, but Caraxes will somehow live long enough to crawl onto the shore, eventually dying in front of the walls of Harrenhal.

Sadly, we haven’t seen much of Helaena’s beautiful blue dragon Dreamfyre. The queen rarely interacted with her mount, but fans are surely hoping we’ll see more of this in Season 3. The finale episode revealed Helaena’s refusal to ride her dragon after Aemond tried to convince her to join him in the battle. Oddly enough, the book claimed she loved soaring the skies with Dreamfyre.

In consequence, the poor dragon remained chained in the Dragonpit until the storming of the pit. She manages to break free, but unfortunately, one of her eyes gets hit by a crossbow bolt, sending her tumbling down and falling to her death.

One of the dragons expected to perish in Season 3 is Jacaerys’ Vermax, which dies during the Battle in the Gullet. Of course, this remains to be seen ifRyan Condalwill make any adjustments as warned by Martin in hisprevious rant about the show.

If it was any consolation, the designs of the dragons in the show were very distinct, and this is all thanks to Martin’s special request to HBO. Here’s to hoping we see all 17 dragons, asconfirmed by the author, in the upcoming seasons. Fans are surely wishing to see more bonding scenes so they better make use of the two-year wait to come up with creative ways to show precious moments between the dragons and their riders.

House of the Dragonis currently available to watch on HBO.
