The tale of Miyamura and Hori isn’t just a typical romance but a slow coming-of-age story in which both protagonists slowly learn to accept the different sides of themselves. In an interview, the director of the anime, Masashi Ishiyama, talked at length about the thoughts that went into the production of the series.

Horimiya‘s OP Hinted at Miyamura’s Deepest Thoughts

The opening theme ofHorimiyais a serene song calledIro Kosui(Color Perfume) by Yoh Kamiyama. It matches the easygoing aesthetic of the rest of the anime. But you might have noticed that the song begins with a few lonely images of a desk and Miyamura being isolated. As it turns out, some serious discussion went into these particular scenes.

Inan interview,Masashi Ishiyama explainedthat the more he listened to the OP, the more it sounded to him like a song about Miyamura’s heart. The director was hesitant at first since it might come out as a biased OP, but decided to go with the decision of portraying Miyamura’s feelings through the theme song.

I decided that the image that would bring out the song the most would be Miyamura’s deepest thoughts, and that is how I ended up with that visual. I tried to visualize Miyamura’s feelings of being dragged through school life, unable to break away from everything.

Horimiyafans often consider Miyamura as the protagonist of the anime since he is a more relatable character and the story is often shown from his POV. Between Miyamura and Hori, the former had far more character development and was also the focus at the beginning and finale of the anime. Thus, portraying Miyamura’s inner thoughts of loneliness in the OP seems like a masterful touch rather than a bias.

Horimiya‘s Director Wishes Rom-Com Anime Don’t Get Churned Out

Rom-com might be a popular genre, but it’s nowhere near the highest-selling one. Needless to say, the most popular genre, be it in Japan or other countries, is Shounen. FromOne Piece, Naruto, andBleachtoMy Hero AcademiaorDandadan, series from the Shonen genre are often the biggest hits.

The director ofHorimiyaalso has a similar opinion, as he acknowledges thatrom-coms aren’t, in fact, the most popular series in Japan. But this, in turn makes the director hope that he can see more series belonging to the genre.

That being said, I would hope not to see them being churned out just because the genre is selling well.

Ishiyama is clearly against the mass production of rom-com anime, something that the Shounen space suffers from. It’s better to haveone beautiful seriesrather than a bunch of no-effort anime with ill attempts at romance and horrible comedy scenes that rely on racy jokes. The director also stated that he would be glad if more explicit and high-quality rom-coms were released.
