Henry Cavill, who has won the hearts of gamers and television fans alike as the star ofNetflix’sThe Witcherstreaming series, has decided to step down from the role of Geralt of Rivia. The news comes directly from the show’s officialTwitter page, confirming that the series will move forward with season four, but with Liam Hemsworth taking on the lead role.

In an official statement, Cavill called Hemsworth “fantastic” and confirmed he would be giving up the role. “As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” he writes. “Liam, good sir, this character has such wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

Cavill most recently reprised his role ofSupermanin Black Adam, which hit theaters on October 19, and he has expressed his intention to continue his adventures on the silver screen as DC’s flagship superhero. He has three pre-prodcution projects currently listed on hisIMDBprofile, inlcuding the next iteration of Highlander.

Hemsworth is best known for his role as Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games series. The younger brother of Chris Hemsworth, theMarvel Cinematic Universe’sThor, and fellow film actor Luke Hemsworth, Liam Hemsworth also starred as Jake Morrison in 2016’s Independence Day: Resurgence.

Thus far, fan reaction to Cavill’s departure has been exceedingly negative, as he has filled the role of Geralt since the series kicked off in 2019.

The Witcher’s third season, which will be Cavill’s last, is currently scheduled to hit Netflixin summer 2023, and a prequel series diving into the origin of the Witcher organization, titled Blood Origin, will release on December 25.
