The eighth episode of the season was directed by Michael Cudlitz, who also plays Lex Luthor in the series. The episode also saw the return of anArrowversefan-favorite in the form of Tom Cavanagh.

Cavanagh famously played multiple roles inThe Flashand differentArrowverseshows before the former series bid farewell to The CW last year. As a result, it is refreshing to watch Cavanagh step into familiar surroundings, albeit as a brand-new character. In an interview, Cudlitz opened up about Cavanagh’s return to the network, and here is what he had to say.
Superman & LoisDirector Michael Cudlitz Breaks Silence on Tom Cavanagh’s Return
Superman & Loisseason 4 has delivered some major ramifications for Tyler Hoechlin’s Man of Steel, with his identity exposed and major threats looming over the city. Lex Luthor actor Michael Cudlitz directed the eighth episode that saw the return ofTom Cavanaghin a new role.
During an interview withScreen Rant, Cudlitz opened up about working with Cavanagh on the episode, especially given the actor’s vast experience with The CW. Cavanagh has not only appeared in multiple shows but also directed two episodes ofSuperman & Lois.

He’s a hack! [laughs] It was wonderful and he knows the crew and the cast.
Cudlitz made the above statement, explaining that he had a pleasant experience working with Cavanagh.

“Everyone is going to be crying in the final episode”: Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman Will Give You the Closure Henry Cavill Never Did
The Lex Luthor actor noted that both he and Cavanagh were actors/directors, which made it easy for them to be on the same page while working on the episode. However, Cudlitz praised Cavanagh for not trying to assert his opinions on the production, proving that the latter is just a chill guy to work with.
Tom Cavanagh’s LatestArrowverseRole inSuperman & Lois, Explained
The eighth episode of season 4 saw Cavanagh return to theArrowverseafter almost a year of absence. The Flashconcluded last year, leavingSuperman & Loisas the final DC TV show on The CW from that era despite it moving away from theArrowverseconnections.
As a result, it wasn’t a surprise when Cavanagh turned up as an entirely new character this time around. In the past, Cavanagh played multiple iterations of Harrison Wells inThe Flash. At the same time, he also playedEobard Thawne / Reverse Flashand Pariah in theArrowverse.

InSuperman & Lois, Cavanagh plays Gordon Godfrey. While that name might not instantly ring bells for viewers, it is familiar to DC Comic fans. Cavanagh’s character appears to be the show’s iteration of Glorious Godfrey, a New God and member of Darkseid’s inner circle.
Superman & Lois: Tyler Hoechlin Really Did What Many Superman Fans Wanted Henry Cavill to Do With Kevin Costner in Man of Steel
While Cavanagh’s new character seems to have larger ties to the Superman mythos, it is unlikely that we will see his New Gods storyline from the comics played out. With just one episode left for the show’s inevitable conclusion, introducing Godfrey’s link to Darkseid might prove a little too much. However, Cavanagh is expected to appear in the series finale to cap off his impressive run with The CW.
