The news comes from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier onResetEra(spotted by Game Rant), who spoke to members of the unannounced project’s development team.
Santa Monica Studios has only developed God of War games since the series began back in 2005, but all signs are pointing to this probably changing with their next game, especially considering that God of War Ragnarok director Eric Williams has seemingly taken the reins of the series.
Development Is Progressing Smoothly
Whatever Cory Barlog has in the works, it seems to be the main thing Santa Monica Studios is currently working on, according to Schreier.

Him describing the project just as “Cory Barlog’s game” adds extra credence to the assumption that whatever Barlog’s got in the works is not related tothe next God of War gamethat is reportedly also in development, which seems like it might bea bit smaller in scalethan the previous huge blockbuster titles.
If the rumors about this 2.5D Metroidvania God of War game are true, it seems safe to assume that it isn’t the developer’s “next big thing” that Barlog is heading.

Considering the pervasive uncertainty that’s currently haunting the AAA game industry amidwidespread layoffs and cancellations, it’s good to know that there are some studios out there that are still going strong, especially one with Santa Monica Studios’ recent pedigree and success.
From the sound of things, whatever they’ve got in the works is still pretty far from becoming public, so for now we can only hope that they can maintain their momentum and make it to release without too many bumps in the road.
