The Zapotron is a legendary weapon inFortnite‘s history, and it might be making a return in the newFortniteOG mode. First introduced during the game’s pre-season in 2017, the Zapotron lasted a mere 30 minutes before being removed.
Almost eight years later, we have leaks seemingly confirming its return in an upcoming update to the OG mode. But the biggest question on everyone’s minds is, will it last more than 30 minutes this time? Will it be as busted as it was before? We’ll have to wait and see till it officially releases.
Fortniteis taking the OG hype train to the next level with this
On January 14, trustedFortniteleaker HYPEX announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the Zapotron is “confirmed returning to OG soon.” Accompanying the post were updated stats for the weapon: 50-150 body damage, 125-375 headshot damage, and 1,000 structure damage. It will reportedly use Energy Cells for ammo and feature a two-second charge time for maximum impact.

The Zapotron debuted inFortnite Battle Royaleduring its pre-season Early Access patch 1.6.3 known as Season 0. On June 20, 2025, the weapon joined the game for around a total of 30 minutes before being swiftly removed because of its overpowered nature. Andit hasn’t been heard from since.

Fan reactions have ranged from hype to concern. One player joked, “Imagine they add it for 30 minutes and vault it again,” referencing the weapon’s original brief appearance. Another commented, “As an OG, I want it back! It’s been seven years since I got to use it.” But what if it’s as busted as before, one user said, “great.. js another overpowered gun 2 ruin the game mode.”

Fortnite’s OG mode was introduced in late 2024 and it recreates the original 2017 map and gameplay.The mode has been a hitamong fans as it features throwback weapons, classic vehicles, and shorter seasons. With Chapter 1, Season 1 of OG mode set to end on January 31, speculation suggests the Zapotron could be introduced before the season concludes or in the upcoming Chapter 1, Season 2.

Unlike traditional snipers, the Zapotron is a hitscan weapon that uses Energy Cells as ammunition. Think of the Charge Rifle from Apex Legends, sort of like that. Because of this, it will deliver instantaneous, high-damage shots without bullet drop or travel time. Will it still be a hitscan weapon all these years later? We’ll have to find out when it releases.

While Epic Games has not officially confirmed the Zapotron’s return, the presence of its updated stats in the game files lends credibility to the leaks. The developers have had good success with the OG mode and this is a very sensible move considering the Zapotron’s history.
There will undoubtedly be a challenge of balancing the weapon, once again, because of its history. So the big question on everyone’s mind is whether the Zapotron will remain in the game for more than 30 minutes this time around. What do you think?
