Ahead of the release ofFire Emblem Engageon January 20,Dutch YouTube channel N1-UPhas released the opening cinematic for the game after a hands-on preview.

The opening is light on a lot of details. Rather, it uses its visual quality to introduce the main cast and this game’s central plot element, Engage Rings. These rings can summonFire Emblem’spast heroes, such as Ike, Marth, Lucina, and Byleth. Summoning these heroes allows the player, an awakened Divine Dragon named Alear, to fight against the forces of the Fell Dragon corrupting the land.

The opening is beautifully animated, showcasing Alear and the new cast of heroes who will help them on their journey. While there is no narration, a few details can be gleaned from the opening. The opening mainly focuses on the female version of Alear but has shots of the male version as well. Two shots show the feminine Alear breaking out of a shell of the masculine Alear, so it could be implying some sort of cycle of rebirth.

One more interesting scene concerning the feminine Alear happens towards the end of the cinematic. Another female figure, who may be a goddess or queen, uses magic while standing with Alear and sees what appears to be either an evil Alear or the human form of the Fell Dragon. The character is surrounded by flames, looking exactly like Alear minus the duo-chromatic hair and eyes, with both only red. The evil smile this character shows suggests that they are antagonistic, but their connection to Alear remains unclear. This is also the last time we see the feminine Alear in the opening, as the final scene shows the masculine Alear dashing through the flames of the Fell Dragon’s true form.

The opening also focused on four additional characters who will be supporting Alear, those being Alfred, Diamant, Ivy, and Timerra. Alfred uses a spear or lance, while Diamant uses a sword. Ivy is a caster and Timerra uses a spear as well. These companions come from various areas of the world and belong to different groups that Alear will interact with. The music in the opening also seems to hint at the characters' backgrounds. Alfred comes from a land of “flowers for everyone,” Diamant’s land is “the rising force of blackened steel,” Timerra fights “in the desert sand,” and Ivy comes from a land with “snow that sweeps across the fields.” These diverse and varied people seem to come together under threat from the Fell Dragon.

Finally, the video ends with a glimpse of the start menu for the game. The screen is a temple-like room with a raised dais that has a circle of pedestals that one can assume holds the Emblem Rings. The camera pans around the circle while a random character’s voice says, “Fire Emblem Engage.”
