Bleach: Thousand Year Blood Warmade some significant progress in the plot. One of the major developments being Uryu Ishida changing sides and Tite Kubo casually implying that he is special.

The next important incident was Yhwach naming Uryu as his successor. Uryu was loyal to Ichigo a few episodes ago, so how did Yhwach suddenly choose him? Uryu is a mixed Quincy and not a pure-blood, so to what did he owe the privilege? Well, there are two reasons.

Uryu Survived Yhwach’s Auswahlen and Hollow Attacks inBleach

Yhwach named Uryu Ishida as his successordue to the fact that he survived the Auswhalen. It is an ability used by Yhwach to steal the powers of all impure Quincies so he could absorb them for himself. This is the same event that led to the deaths of Ichigo and Uryu’s mothers nine years before.

Uryu’s father was a pure Quincy, while his mother was a mixed-blood, thus, Uryu is also a mixed-blood Quincy by birth. However, the Auswahlen did not kill him. This intrigued Yhwach, as he believed Uryu had some extraordinary power or resistance ability inside him. It is believed that Uryu survived the event due to the Anthithesis that lay dormant inside him, and the Auswahlen triggered his ability.

Previously, it had been revealed that Quincies are especially weak against Hollows, and their attacks would cause them critical damage, if not death. However, Uryu had taken some intense blows in his battle against Hollows. He was injured, but he never succumbed to his injuries, something that cannot be said about other normal Quincies. Thus, whenTite Kubocalls Uryu special, he was not exaggerating it.

Tite Kubo Intended Yhwach to Keep a Close Eye on His Enemy

Yhwachhad stated that Uryu possesses something that might even surpass his own powers as the Quincy King. But another possibility is that he wanted to keep a close eye on Uryu and his actions. He named Uryu his successor in front of the Sternritters, which could cause unrest, and that could be exactly what he wanted.

Thus,Yhwach already suspected betrayalfrom Uryu. By naming him as the successor, he successfully put the attention of the Sternritters on Ishida. One wrong move from Uryu and the news would spread like wildfire as all eyes are currently observing his actions. Thus, he would not be able to do anything behind Yhwach’s back.

NamingUryu as a successorwas a bold move of Yhwach. He was curious about Uryu’s complete capabilities but was also suspicious of him as he was once loyal to Ichigo. So, to ensure Uryu could not betray the Quincy King, he was pulled into complex Quincy politics.
