It’s very easy to get all the Smithing Stones inElden Ringmixed up. There are ordinary Smithing Stones, Somber Smithing Stones, Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones, and Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones. If you’re not paying attention, these can get a bit confusing.

The dragon-smithing stones of both types are even more challenging to come by than the rest of the stones. There are only eight Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones in all the Lands Between! Most require multiple steps to acquire them, as if Elden Ring couldn’t have made leveling up your weapons and armor any harder.
The First Somber Ancient Smithing Stone
The first Ancient Stone is one of the harder ones to gather. First, you must travel to the Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes and begin theWhite-Faced Varre Questline. He’ll humiliate you about being maidenless, provide you with items to invade other players' worlds, and set you off to begin his quest line. After completing his quest, you will receive the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, allowing you to teleport to Mohgwyn Palace.
From here, climb up the stairs and follow the path leading to a dark passageway. Make your way through the darkness and rest at the site of grace that awaits you. Make your way up the small staircase and towards the excessively large statue. There will be a group of minor NPCs guarding the chest that holds the stone. Defeat or run by them and open the chest that rests at the statue’s feet to obtain the first Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

Haligtree Somber Ancient Smithing Stone Locations
At the Haligtree, three Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones are within reach. Two are pretty easy to get; the third, not so much. To obtain the first one, fast travel or make your way to thePrayer Room Site of Grace. From here, exit the door to the North, and make a left. Take this path until you reach a staircase leading downwards; you will need tojump off the railing onto the large diagonal platform below youand then leap onto the floor to your left (the one with eight mini columns in a circle). Continue North past these columns andhop onto another large diagonal platformsimilar to the one before. This time, make your way upwards andenter the open arch ahead of you. There will be a chest inside that contains the first smithing stone in this location.
Return to thePrayer RoomSite of Graceand exit the room to the North. This time, upon exiting the room, look east below you. A large path will outline the edge of this massive structure. There are multiple ways to reach this path; once you get to it, run all the way Southwest until you come across a dead body with the Somber Ancient Smithing Stone.
The final Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone in the Haligtree can be collected afterdefeating Malenia. This is no small feat, but upon defeating her, rest at the Site of Grace andreturn to the Unalloyed Gold Needle. When you return the needle, you will receive Miquella’s Needle as well as a Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

The Mountaintops Of The Giants
The first Somber Ancient Smithing Stone in the Mountaintops of the Giants can be foundon the frozen river in the Consecrated Snowfield. Run along the river until you reach the location marked on the map above and get invaded byAnastasia, Tarnished-Eater. Defeating her will provide you with the fifth smithing stone on this list.
Next, travel northward until you reach the Apostate Derelict Site of Grace. From here, approach the gigantic sleeping woman, summon Latenna and collect theSilver Mirrorshield. Exhaust Latenna’s dialogue until you receive the sixth Somber Ancient Smithing Stone.
Crumbling Farum Azula And Post Maliketh Royal Captial
If you haven’t defeated Maliketh or unlocked theCrumbling Farum Azulayet, you will not be able to collect these smithing stones; if you have, fantastic! Make your way to theDragon Temple RooftopSite of Grace at the northernmost point of the Crumbling Farum Azula. Make your way South past the enemies and the dragon that will spawn in your way until you reach a gazebo-like structure that holds a Somber Ancient Smithing Stone.
For the eighth and final Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, head over to theLeyndell, Captial of Ash Siteof Grace. From here, travel West under the arm of the broken stone dragon, where you will find a small opening with a ladder on your left. Climb the ladder, make your way up two sets of stairs and focus your attentionWest, past the railing. You should see a glowing item guarded by a large creature with wings and an axe. Jump onto the platform below the barrier when the enemy is facing away from you, and proceed to the dead body that holds the final Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
