The return of one of gaming’s oldest icons may be at hand, but in a different form than anyone expected, as the creator of theDevil May Cryanimated show has purchased the rights to make aDuke NukemTV show.

The Duke Nukem franchise has been dead since the launch ofDuke Nukem Forever, which had an infamously long development time and underwhelmed audiences worldwide. Since then, the gaming world has forgotten Duke, save for theoccasional leaked buildof one of the older titles.

More demons to get slaughtered!

Well, not everyone has forgotten Duke. It turns out he has one important friend left: Adi Shankar, the creative mind behind theCastlevaniaandDevil May Cry TV shows. Shankar toldEsquirethat he has purchased the TV show rights to a Duke Nukem rights from Gearbox Software, but notably, not any gaming rights.

What Will The Duke Nukem TV Show Look Like?

Considering the rampant misogyny, crude humor, andsend-ups of action heromovies that were stale even when the games were out, it’s hard to imagine what Duke Nukem will look like in 2025. Shankar has ideas, though, as he was asked about his vision for the show.

It’s a middle finger to everybody. When Duke Nukem blew up, a bunch of people sat around trying to turn it into a brand, when it’s just a middle finger. Duke Nukem can’t be made by a corporation, because the moment a corporation makes Duke Nukem, it’s no longer Duke Nukem. I don’t intend on having anyone tell me what to do on this one.

This doesn’t reveal too much about the concept of the show, or even whether it will be live-action or animated. Fans likely won’t know more for a long time, as Shankar is still busy with the second season of Devil May Cry, which will likely come out first.

It’ll be fascinating to see howDuke Nukem is recreatedin the modern era, as it’s going to annoy people regardless. A modernized Duke Nukem will draw the ire of the fanbase, while the same one from the past brought into the present will be hated by the people who don’t like the crude and offensive nature of the games. Shankar has his work cut out for him on this one, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s him.
