The first story mission inDragon Ball Z: Kakarot sees Son Goku spending time with his son, Gohan. During this endearing moment,Gokudecides to catch a few fish for the two to eat. You, the player, are thrust into the fishing mechanic, given an early impression this is an important part of the game — and it is, despite how little you will be forced to use it.

Kakarotonly makes you do it here at the beginning and in a few side stories. But with a few tricks, you’ll find that there are tons of reasons to fish as much as possible.
5You Only Fail The First Quick Time Event If You Don’t Press Anything
Throw your rod or tail into the water and wait for the fish to bite. you’re able to see the outline of the fish in the water,so you’ll roughly know when they’re ready to strike. Once you hook one, you’ll enter into a quick time event where a cursor will bounce back and forth on a curved bar.Your goal is to hit the prompt when the cursor is in the red section, but if you push the button and miss, you will still go onto the next quick time event.
In the second event, the fish will leap high into the air,and you have to hit another prompt as the circle closes in. If you miss-click in the first event, the circle will be much smaller, but that’s it. You still will be able to catch the fish, it’s barely a punishment.

If you didn’t hit the button in the first QTE, then the fish will get away. You likely caught the first fish easily, thinking the fishing is really easy. As it turns out, it’s even easier than you thought.Do attempt to get into the red to make the second quick-time event easier, but in reality, as long as you click, you’ll catch the fish.
4There Are Golden Fish
Regular fish will give you ingredients for cooking and maybe a few valuables, but golden fish is where the real rewards are. These rare fish will drop more valuable loot when you’ve caught them as well as still giving you meat to cook with. With a normal fish, you’ll likely get a scale, a tooth, or a fin, while golden fish can still drop those while also dropping gemstones. These gemstones can be sold for a good deal of money.
You won’t be surprised by golden fish either, as their outline will glow yellow while under the water. They are easy to farm, especially with one trick.

3The Bait Is Better Than It Claims
You’ll find bait scattered around shorelines and even for sale in shops. Baits such as Holy Crab! M claim they slightly raise the chance of golden fish, but that’s very much underselling the power. If you use any bait that raises the chance of golden fish, it’s generally a guarantee that several golden fish will suddenly appear.

Not only that, but a lot of thebait that summons golden fish also has the chance of giving you more lootfrom any fish you’ve caught. Use plenty of bait, and you’ll have more gemstones and golden fish parts than you’ll ever need in barely any time at all. This begs the question of just what to do with those shiny trinkets.
2Give The Gemstones And Golden Fish Parts To Bulma
During the beginning of the Android Saga, you will play out the driving episode of theanimeand then be granted the R&D in Capsule Corp to create vehicles you can drive around with. After you build your Hovercar and your Bipedal Robo Walker, you can furtherupgrade the vehicles by handing over the treasure to Bulma. As mentioned before, the gemstone and golden fish parts can be sold for Zeni, but the Dragon Balls let you wish for Zeni — so there’s a better argument thatthese materials should instead be given to Bulma for vehicle upgrades.
Materials from golden fish will give a lot of experience to your vehicles, making it easy to max out your Hovercar and Robo Walkers levels with only parts from golden fish — especially when the bait makes fishing them up even easier.

1There Are A Lot Of Fish In The Z Encyclopedia
Finally, there is anin-game Bestiary that lists every single species of fish. If you only fish when you have to in the main story and the side stories, you will be nowhere near filling out all of these entries. Most fish are only found in one specific area of the map, and there are also fish that can only be found on Planet Namek — and Planet Vegeta with the Bardock DLC. Thegolden fish also have separate entries, no matter how much they all look like variants of other fish.
If you want to do everything Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has to offer, you will end up spending more time fishing than you might have assumed from its limited spotlight. But, it was given an early spotlight for a reason, as along with being something fun to do, it hands out plenty of rewards no matter your playstyle.
