While making compelling characters is essential to proper immersion in any RPG, the player character’s companions – those who travel with us day in and day out – are those who (arguably) matter the most.

No one wants to come back from a grueling mission just to chat with a couple of one-dimensional doornails, after all.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard: 13 Essential Beginner Tips

If you want to step up and lead your band of heroes, you’ll need to know a thing or two.

Dragon Age: The Veilguardbrings seven wonderful companions for Rook to get to know and fight alongside, and while they are all interesting in their own right, some are just a tad more complex than others.

Dragon Age The Veilguard Veil Jumper

This article will focus more on the characters themselves, with what they offer gameplay-wise being secondary.

7Bellara Lutare

The Token Nerd

Associated Faction

Veil Jumpers

Make no mistake:Bellarais the nerdiest character of the bunch(with Emmrich being a close second), but even so, she still fits perfectly into a very specific archetype.

The person who is reserved with their past. The person who drowns themselves in their work to make up for it. The person who hides their pain behind smiles. The person who speaks about their work in a way no one else understands because of its remarkably complicated nature.

Bellara fits that bill effortlessly. Though despite that, she is nonetheless an extremely amusing character to chat with.

The Buffest Person Here

Lords of Fortune

Taash is your classic blunt and brutish characterwho prefers straightforward talking and fighting. Normally, this would fit very nicely into an archetype. However, they prove time and time again that they have a bit more to them than meets the eye, which pulls them above Bellara.

It becomes very clear fast thatthey have a deep respect for dragons, despite being a famed dragon hunter. That, in itself, tells a great deal about their character and what kind of individual they are, and it is quite refreshing.

Dragon Age The Veilguard Grey Warden

This added meaning to it when you find out early on that they can breathe fire like a dragon. Coincidence?

… And Assan

Grey Wardens

It is true that Davrin fits rather well into thestoic, righteous, and driven warrior archetype. However, something very specific about his character adds to this in a very meaningful way (aside from Assan, of course).

It is strongly implied thatDavrin was a criminal in his past life, as many other wardens were. This makes his commitment to the Grey Wardens much less of a “knight in shining armor” story, and instead, one of redemption.

Dragon Age The Veilguard Harding-1

And redemption arcs make for some of the most compelling characters out there when done right.

4Lace Harding

She’s Back!

The Inquisition

Harding is, mechanically speaking, undoubtedlyone of the best characters to have in your party from a gameplay standpoint, making her great in anyparty combo. But, her character lacks the level of depth that most others have.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard All Factions, Ranked

Six different factions with six very different jobs and looks, but which are the best?

She’s a bit too “happy-go-lucky,” and it is easily overshadowed.

That said, she does have her own quirks, and her character generally remains constant throughout the story. Furthermore, she has her own struggle that Rook helps out with, and although it isn’t earth-shattering (sorry for the pun), it is still quite interesting to see through.

3Neve Gallus

She’s On The Case

Shadow Dragons

Minrathous is a city in a constant power struggle between the Venatori and Templars (and a couple of other factions), two very powerful and influential factions (though the Venatori are of a far more evil alignment than their counterparts).

AndNeve Gallus works as a private investigatorto pay her bills in this mess of a city.

Neve’sguarded and slightly cold personality is unmistakably cynical, and for good reason; she has seen many things she probably wishes she didn’t see throughout her many jobs.

To that point, Neve herself is a case to crack – which tracks considering her job – andshe offers a nice amount of levity and sarcasm in her banterwith Rook and the other team members making her a very enjoyable companion to have around.

2Emmrich Volkarin

A Civil Necromancer? What?

Mourn Watch

Emmrich Volkarin is a very amusing character for a multitude of reasons. Along with his own personal stakes and development, the first impressions of his personality truly allow him to shine as an individual.

The Mourn Watchis one of your more typical necromantic orders, filled to the brim with skeletons, skulls, serious necromancers, scary voices, and even bigger skeletons.

However, what makes Emmrich atypical in this situation ishis incredibly posh and well-mannered nature, something we don’t usually come to expect from a necromancer. He subverts archetypal expectations with style, which is excellent.

Plus, his skeleton butler, Manfred, is lovely.

1Lucanis Dellamorte

Here Comes the Edge

Antivan Crows

Lucanis, like Harding, is one of the best companions to have gameplay-wise, however unlike her, his character is far more interesting.

He is the rogue of your group; a famed assassin who earned the nickname the “Demon of Vyrantium.” He is charming and has a great deal of finesse, as many expert assassins tend to. But,his character is as enjoyable as it is partly because of who’s inside his head: Spite.

A well-tempered man and a childish demon: an excellent combination.

Spite is a demon, and the dynamic between the two is reminiscent of the classic “only I can hear you because you’re in my head” trope.

It is quite entertaining, butStrife is still a demon, allowing for a more weighted approach to the character,so it’s not just fun and gamesall the time.

At the end of the day, this creates a superb character dynamic, putting Lucanis and his partner in crime at the top of the list.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard: Should Harding or Davrin Lead the Second Team?

During the Isle of the Gods quest in Dragon Age: Veilguard, you have to choose who will lead the second team. This gude helps you make a decision.
