Don’t Starve Togetherhas released the first major update of 2023: Year of the Bunnyman. The seasonal event adds new activities and items to the multiplayer survival game.

Canadian developer Klei announced the arrival of the Year of the Bunnyman on social media andSteam. The event is inspired by Lunar New Year, a holiday marking the beginning of the lunar calendar, and serves as an in-game celebration of the Year of the Rabbit. In the announcement, Klei shared a gif of a Bunnyman offering a pillow to Wigfrid. Based on the positioning of the figures, the depiction appears to have been inspired by The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo.

The Year of the Bunnyman event and update details were walked through by developer Jason on theofficial Klei forum. By offering a carrot to the Bunnyman Shrine, players can summon Cozy Bunnymen from underground. In contrast to normal Bunnymen, Cozy Bunnymen wear a striped nightcap, carry a pillow, and are not hostile. After the Bunnymen burrow their way up to the surface, players can play “spin the carrot” with them or challenge them to a pillow fight. Defeating Bunnymen in the Pillow Fighting Pit grants the player Lucky Gold Nuggets. Different types of pillows and armor, such as the Beefalo Pillow Armor and Kelpy Pillow Armor, can be equipped before entering a pillow fight. Outside of pillow fights, snacks like Moon Cakes and Bunny Rolls can be used to restore hunger, sanity, and health. Rabbit Lamps offer players a new light source and decoration at their base.

Klei has also added several new skins in the update. For $8.99, players can purchase a Masquerader Survivors Chest containing skins for five characters: Willow, Wes, Woodie, Warly, and Wortox. The Masquerader Survivors skins feature dramatic masks, accessories, and costumes reminiscent of the Venice Carnival. Players may also weave these skins with a spool or find them as in-game drops.

Aside from the new features and skins, Klei has made a number of bug fixes to Don’t Starve Together. Bug fixes addressed various problems, from shading and coloring issues to crashes in certain situations. The developer has also fixed various animation issues involving Wes, Woodie, Wormwood, and Werepigs. In addition, Merms will no longer chop down Winter’s Feast Trees.

Jason tells Don’t Starve Together players that a new roadmap is nearing completion and set to arrive soon. The update also notes that the team is currently developing content to release throughout the 2023 content schedule. “You’re going to need to hold out a little longer, but I promise it will be worth the wait,” he said. “Bold statement, I know, but we’re pretty excited and we think you will be too.”
